Goodbye Olympics

Feb 28, 2010 five to eleven pm

In a nail-biting final game Canada won the gold medal in hockey defeating the United States in a score of something to something.  Honestly, I wasn't paying much attention.

I'm just glad Canada won.  Not because of some adopted national pride, but more because I didn't want to deal with the lingering smell of tear gas and burning cars.

At this very moment the entire country of Canada is drunk and singing the national anthem outside my apartment building.

But to be completely honest, it's really nice to see.  Canada is a pretty cool place filled with really nice people and I think they deserve this and to feel good and have so much pride in their country.

I also read that President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Harper had a beer bet on the outcome of the game.  I'm not sure why presidents of countries wager meaningless bets on sports games.  If you're going to bet on something, bet big.  The looser of the hockey game should be forced to adopt the health care system of the winning team.  That would have been a bet worth having.

I also have to confess.  For as much Grumpiness as I have towards the Olympics, I could not resist going to at least one event, so last week I went and watched Curling.  I remember making fun of Curling when I was a kid, but it's a damn fun sport and probably like most people, I went for the fights.

The looser of the hockey game should be forced to adopt the health care system of the winning team. <-- Love that quote, Ron! I think it must be kind of funny having drunk singing Canadians all around you :)

Haaha, I saw that game of Sweeden vs. Switzerland on TV, and to think that Mr. Gilbert was there!

Something relative to that sport finally takes sense...

Curling, a sport that we swedes are good at. I like. :)

"loose", "Sweeden" ... You guys stl my vwls!

At least finland took bronze after that miserable game against USA. I know its just sports and generally I agree, its pointless, but there's just something about ice hockey that makes me care :)

but only olympics and world championships, I cant stand watching games of random people playing against another bunch of random people (i.e. NHL or any other hockey league).

Also, as an obvious man of fashion, I see you managed to get the norwegian team in there. Those pants have apparently recieved more publicity than they have, but while it's kinda sad to be outstaged by your pants, at least they got a silver medal as a compensation.

Go pants! Go Norway!

Ron, you were singing along with the anthem, right? I thought I heard something down here in the state of Washington...

I have a suspicion that curling is only an Olympic sport due to the limited nature of things people can do on ice. Otherwise we'd see darts or shuffleboard or lawn bowling in the summer olympics. When the guy who wins the gold medal looks like Wallace Shawn, you need to wonder.

Ron's blog posts are getting more frequent. This means he has more time on his hands... DeathSpank must be finished and in its last phase where not much is left to do. Am I onto something here, Ron?

Here in Vancouver I think just about everyone, eventually, stopped trying to do work over the last two weeks :)

I have just read the great good OMG news...

DeathSpank will be published by EA on XBL, PC and PSN !!!!

GREAT GREAT GREAT NEWS !!!!!

Well done Ron!

Now, when?!?...

Posted by lechuckGL on Mar 4, 2010 twenty past eleven am

Changing to a MUCH MORE important topic: Ron, is it true ? Deathspank will be a console only title ? That will be an ugly stab in the back for all the PC gamers all over the glove whoe grew up playing your games...
Please, tell me that's not true..I don't want to assume fetal position and cry :(

Posted by I'm a PC on Mar 4, 2010 ten past three pm

I would love to know where GGJJ read that info. This one says otherwise:

Please, Ron, clarify this shit and say if there's going to be a PC version.. because if there isn't I'm going to go there to.. to.. fucking deathspank you.

And while you're at it, if you speak with Tim, tell him that also goes for Brutal Legend.

WTF!?!?!?!??!?!!!!!!!!!??!!!!

EA Partners announces they will be publishing DeathSpank, the upcoming adventure game from Hothead Games designed by Ron Gilbert, renowned for his work on the Monkey Island series. The bad news is that the announcement seems to indicate there will be no PC edition of this game, saying DeathSpank  will be released this year through Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

Is this nameless news true, Ron??? >:(

I can't believe it could be true, I would have to rob a bank and get a recent console(plus the money to support your next game) to play DeathSpank!

Posted by Finbar O'Mahony on Mar 5, 2010 twenty to two am

No PC version, its understandable since its so difficult to make sure it works on every type of PC out there, its a huge overhead; testing it with different graphics cards and stuff

But what i cant believe is that hothead is using EA to publish it

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, EA are in the same mold as ACTIVISION which = CROOKS
If you get into bed with them you will regret it,
sure enough now its just they will market and distribute,
Then they will have a share in hothead
Then they will do a take over of hothead
Then they will screw you over in every way possible to get the most work for the least pay.
Soon after that you will be solo again, trying to build a new game from scratch because they own the rights for further deathspank games which would be rubbish because the driving force behind it you will be off on your merry way because they are a complete shower.

Yeah, that's exactly why they don't make PC games anymore, especially one that's not being focused on gameplay but on cutting edge graphics like Deathspank ¬¬

ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON

We want an answer, dammit!

About PC-version:

So it´s coming. The questions is: When?

Posted by Metro on Mar 6, 2010 twenty five to noon

Indeed it would be fairly shocking to not have a PC release -- that would just be throwing away easy money.  I suspect it will more likely than not be available on Steam as a couple of XBLA titles have gotten ported over there.

What surprises me is that the game may have a fairly low cost.  I personally don't have a console but a friend of mine said most XBLA titles are only $10 or so -- I'd be pleasantly surprised if Deathspank were that low.

When is the 'real' Monkey Island 3 a graphic adventure by Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman coming out? What's wrong with Lucasarts for not doing that?

Posted by Fraci on Mar 10, 2010 five to five am

The only good things done by Lucasarts in the last 15 years is "Monkey Island Special Ed."
Well, and to be honest, thay were able also to ruin this title too.. (look at the new Guybrush character and at the new scumm controls...)

Posted by Steven on Mar 10, 2010 twenty five to eight am

I have to disagree with the Monkey Island Special Edition being ruined. Although I grew up with the originals back in 1990-1992 and on, I appreciate that they took the time to re-created a pc classic. I thought they did an excellent job and hope they created MI2 se. Just the fact that you can switch back and forth from old to new just blows my mind.

ROOOON, no no nonono
