DeathSpank!!!

Jul 13, 2010 twenty five to ten am

You didn't think there was actually a game did you?  Oh, no, no, all this hype was about re-releasing these two DeathSpank Grumpy Gamer comics.

Other people's comments:

Any idea when this is going up at PSN? The European PSN homepage more or less pretends the game does not exist at all, and the store itself is entirely useless for this kind of information anyhow.

Here I am, money in hand (not literally, actually I am dreading the "buy nonsense fantasy currency first/then buy game" silliness), let me spend it! :)

The main question remains: pc version when?

Btw, I love your comments in MI2. And yes the graveyard pants scene is the best scene in game history.

Posted by Dan on Jul 13, 2010 eleven am

How about doing some research about that topic with your ol'friend Google? or surfing around Hotheads website.

Congratulations on the Release, hope everything goes wells.
I'm wondering if the EU XBLA Will get released on time... when it comes to games I kinda hate being on Europe.

Posted by guy that used to play pong on Jul 13, 2010 ten past eleven am

I'm sorry but Google stopped being my friend a long time ago, pretty much when they decided to stop being a nice search engine and started developing software, operation systems, electronic diapers and death star plans.

As a matter of fact I did search through Hothead's site and Google and found absolutely nothing new, just that info back from April that the PC version will probably come. So if there's more info on the subject, especially a release date, I'm all ears.

Posted by D on Jul 13, 2010 ten to one pm

As people from Hothead stated, they don't want to make a poor port of the console version for the PC, they want to make a Full made-for PC version, Thats why the console version came first I bet.

Another reason (And this is ME talking, not anything said by Hothead), It's not a good moment to announce a PC Game at the moment, from a Business point of View, atleast I wouldn't if I were them.

It will come, It's NOT OFFICIAL, but it Will probally come, be patiente, play other games meanwhile, or enjoy the console releases if you have one of the two.

Asking every three days for a release date wont make it come soonerish, it just stresses the developers more, and trust me, they didn't forget http://www.hotheadgames.com/blog/?p=136 , I'm sure of it.

I think that the major disappointment is that this game claims to be "Monkey Island meets Diablo" and both of these games were for the PC, not to mention that in the comics in which the Grumpy Gamer is seen playing a hypotetical Deathspank,  he plays on a Computer! So it kinda surprises people that a PC version isn't neither announced nor confirmed and I think that it should have been at least announced since it doesn't change a damn thing if they say it or not, the only thing that changes is that gives a little hope for the people who grew up with MI and Diablo and played it on the PC.

Posted by D on Jul 14, 2010 twenty five past nine am

On a market with such big competition as the Gaming one, WHEN, and HOW you make announcements such as that one really can mark a difference in sales count.

By the way, on the comics Grumpy Gamer is playing the Sequel of DeathSpank... does that means...

Posted by Chris on Jul 17, 2010 quarter past eleven am

Dam your optimism!

As much as I don't mind waiting for a properly prepared PC version, it still always sours my opinion of the given developer, even if it's the publisher's decision to exclude this platform.

Wonderful web-comics!!!

Looking forward DeathSpank!!!

Posted by Fealiks on Jul 13, 2010 five to one pm

I KNEW IT! I could tell from all the hints you were dropping in your blog posts. Please... [REDACTED]? Redacted sounds like Pterodactyl which is a Dinosaur which is a race of creatures wiped out by a comet which sounds like "comic". And did you really think nobody got what you were talking about when you said deathspank was a "video game"? Video games are a form of electronic entertainment. Electricity was invented 132 years ago, which is the exact number of bubbles on a standard sheet of bubble wrap. Bubble wrap is used to package parcels. Parcels contain paper. What else is made up of paper? Comics.

And you thought you had us fooled.

Ron, I hope it sells so well that you'll be forced to do a new game asap. :)

And yes the graveyard pants scene it's just epic and pure fun.

I dont own any consoles so I cant play Deathspank.

These cartoons make me sad because the Grumpy Gamer plays them on a PC :(

Posted by MarioColbert on Jul 14, 2010 quarter to four am

Hi, Ron Gilbert.

I'm going to review your demo: it's a piece of shit, Ron Gilbert, and a no-good one at that! I hated it. I couldn't equip half the items I've found! I couldn't accept half the quests! Why, the damn thing reset on me with no warning (apart from a steady, visible count-down timer in the top right corner of the screen that counted to zero) just when I began to "feel it" as the kids say! If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were trying to show me just what my wife feels like when I'm done, but with a timer!

I couldn't stand it, Ron Gilbert. I couldn't possibly look at a game designer of legendary stature and play this terrible broken thing, in which most things didn't work....

I see all these things have been fixed from the non-demo version that I just downloaded, and I'm now relieved....

I thereby wag my finger at this demo "non-game." And giving you all a heads up - the non-demo one is utterly fantastic! Don't be confused, populace! Non-demo DeathSpank!!!

Posted by Someone on Jul 14, 2010 twenty five past four am

People do not understand the meaning of word "DEMO"....
Or maybe it is a hilarious post....

Either way is amazing to see how the mind of people is so "varied"...

Posted by Quests on Jul 14, 2010 quarter to eight am

Hi.

I get it.

The difference between the PC and the console version of DS is the same as in Monkey Island 2 easy and "i want it all! All the puzzles! All the work!" mode.

Right? We get more puzzles and brainy parts, right?

Posted by Dan on Jul 14, 2010 twenty past nine am

Actually, after playing on the console (I'm still playing as I type this) with the Xbox360 control scheme it plays really nice, but, I can see why they are taking some extra time with the PC Version.

For all European fans on XBL:
It is still not under "New Proposal"... You have to find it manually under the letter D!!!!

I'm going to download this today. YAY!

Posted by Ivar on Jul 14, 2010 twenty five past eleven am

It's cool to see DS is out, now I'm just waiting for the PC version.
DS is the third game on my 2010 gamelist. Nr1 is Mafia 2, nr2 was MI2SE(great remake btw) and nr3 is Deathspank.

But now that you are done with DS and Hothead Games I hope, wish and pray that you get an offer from Lucasarts:)

Posted by Todd Houshmand on Jul 14, 2010 quarter past one pm

ATTENTION GRUMPY GAMER: What's better?  The XBLA edition or the PSN?  I'm planning on buying both versions eventually, but I was wondering which you would suggest buying first.  Also congratulations, I hope this opens a lot of doors for you, make sure you save at this point, so you can always restore later on.

If you don't know or haven't seen much of a difference, which one did you develop it on?  I'd imagine the Xbox first, because I've heard it's easier to port to and from pc and also to other systems, when you start from xbox or pc.

Posted by Someone on Jul 14, 2010 twenty to two pm

xbox has better textures also you can play it at 1080p, ps3 it's only 720p with poor downscaled textures.

Posted by MarioColbert on Jul 15, 2010 quarter to two am

Now that's some FUD spread quite effectively. You got a link that supports this claim, "Somebody" ? Because you see I have a PS3 and a 360, and I got the full version on PSN (yesterday) and a demo on the 360 (today) and they both run at 1080p.

Posted by Someone on Jul 14, 2010 twenty five past one pm

GAME'S FUN, MAN! LOLOLOL

Posted by Sogeking on Jul 14, 2010 three pm

I was going to buy it, but i won't spend 1200 points in a game that, in 2010, isn't in my language (spanish), sorry Ron, I promise that i will play it when it's in spanish or cheaper.

Posted by Rusty Broomhandle on Jul 15, 2010 twenty past four am

What does "in 2010" have to do with it? It'll always be expensive to translate a media product to other languages.

In your opinion, what languages should a game be translated to?

Posted by Sogeking on Jul 15, 2010 twenty to nine am

With "in 2010" I mean that nowadays in Europe most games are translated to at least 5 languages (english, spanish, french, german and italian), the times of the games only in english passed long ago.

Is expensive to translate a game? Maybe, but not translating it it's like not selling it in Europe, if the 90% of the companies translate the games, I doubt that it cause losses.

It's ironic that in 1990 one of the few games that were translated in Spain was Monkey Island.

And the guy telling me to learn English, sorry for not being born in USA or England :(

A game can be enjoyed fully if it's translated in your main language, and personally, I understand English, so I'll buy it when it cheaper, because I can not enjoy it like you.

I hope you now understand my reasons :P

Posted by Siebe on Jul 20, 2010 five past five am

Well, Europe is bigger then France, Germany, Spain and Italy and personally I want to play it in the original language. I quite dislike translations, and try as much as I can to read/play/watch something in it's original language. The original vision always loses something in translation. For some languages it's more difficult, but English is so present in the media landscape that it should be easy to learn the basics. Games and movies actually help learning the language I think, especially games like Monkey Island.

Posted by Jeppo on Jul 15, 2010 quarter to seven am

Sogeking, ok, I can understand the international economic crysis...
But we are talking about 1200 msp...

The best 1200p (15€?) that you could possibly invest!

We are talking about an addictive materpiece here!!!

Posted by Dan on Jul 15, 2010 seven am

Go spend 1.200 MS Points on some English Classes then, I find it amazing, that on 2010, people still don't learn or doesn't want to learn GOOD English.

I didn't had even the slight problem playing it, and I even prefer it on English.

Posted by Name on Jul 15, 2010 ten past nine pm

It's not a problem of knowing or not knowing that english language. It's a matter of behaviour. You can understand the language, but if it isn't your mother language, you will be always losing some of the meanings. If a company doesn't care if you understand everything that you pay for, you don't have to care for the company's benefit. At least, I understand that position. You don't count for the company's proposals, the company doesn't count for you.

However, if I buy a PS3/XBOX some day, I may give the game a chance, if it's cheaper. Maybe. Could be. I hope so, at least. Sure if some day it's translated.

Awesome game!! .. I suppose. Sadly I'm a PC-gamer in europe
Like UncleLou said: Here I am, money in hand ... let me spend it

Posted by MarioColbert on Jul 15, 2010 two am

DeathSpank looks incredible, Ron. Hothead artists have brought it and then some. I'm reminded of the timelessness of Wind Waker when I look at the way the game looks, stylized, fresh, bright, gorgeous.

As far as the game is concerned - it's a pretty polished hack-em-up adventure that (perhaps due to its console-centric control scheme) doesn't feel like a Diablo "clone." I also don't understand why grinding is so much fun in this game. Maybe because the action is hectic and fun, and the environments and places are varied, detailed, and beautiful.

I feel the weakest point of the game is the interface of shops & inventory. Can't get over inability to see the effect of item-swapping (like FF games do) or an ability to see equipped & highlighted items stats side-by-side. Can't see the stats of new weapons side-by-side with equipped ones, either. Ultimately, this really discourages me from shopping and micromanaging DeathSpank until I get to the point of doing very poorly in the game. If you were going for that, it certainly worked. If you weren't going for that, hope it means something that I've been having a damn blast playing DeathSpank with said "shortcomings."

Last, I applaud the combat game mechanic, which naturally implies combos over single-button-mashing. In fact, the first time I played the demo, I've made it a point to see how much I could push the default weapons using simply varied combinations... Had a blast. Well done!

PC is like the old grandfather nobody wants to visit and the gaming industry is like his family.

-They know they are here now thanks to him, alas, no apreciation at all. Nobody visits anymore.

-They withhold information from him. [REDACTED]

- He complains a lot and keeps nagging them about how good things were in the good ol` days.

-If sharing a room with him and be compelled to talk, they will blatantly lie about visiting more often.

-They always say he is about to die but he proves to be a tough mother fu**er (Both literally and metaphorically)

-When they finally decide to make a loving, sincere visit, he will treat them like crap and spit food to their faces.

I bought it because I have been craving a hack n slash, and the humour seemed a lot like my style.

Once I started playing, I couldn't stop until DeathSpank was level 20 and Lord Fragglerock lay obliterated. Very well done and I hope to hell there is more coming.

Hey Mr. Gilbert,
why has the red haired girl in 'Death Spank' the same name as the one we held prisoner in our mansion 23 years ago?!?

Congratulations on releasing Deathspank Mr. Gilbert.

I hope the sales will go extremely well, so we will see more games from you in the near future (I can't wait again for decades for a new game of yours).

From what I have seen  the first revies are very positive and this is promising for the quality of Deathspank. Can't wait to play it (when PC version comes out).

By the way, does your RSS feeder has a problem? because it won't show this last entry on my PC.

Pretty fun game!

A couple of things you could do better next time (imho):

-Real character personalization. Replayability is always good.
-The HP regen mainly based on food sometimes slows the action, not a great thing in an ARPG.

DEATHSPANK is my GOTY so far togheter with ALAN WAKE.

Most disappointing game of 2010?
Mass Effect 2: a mediocre unreal shooter games that has been able to waste all the prestige and the heritage build by the first mavellous episode.
(Mass Effect ONE is, so far, one of the contender for the GOTG).

Posted by DrAtomic on Jul 20, 2010 twenty past ten am

Loved Deathspank! But you having left hothead worries me, what about DLC/expansions? Also pleassssssssse let those DLC/expansions be as big as the 'normal' gameworld.
