Spielberg

May 19, 2008 five to eleven am

Whenever Spielberg would visit Lucasfilm to see George, he would often stop by Games to see what we were up to.  Not content to just look over our shoulders, he would muscle his way in front of the computer and grab the joystick or mouse and start playing.  I was always impressed with his knowledge of games.  He was an avid gamer.

Cool he likes MI :D

He's really great. He makes huge box office hits on-demand, and great serious movies too. I just watched Close Encounters last night, it's brilliant!

That's pretty bitchin'.

Oh, nice to have a respected person in a respected industry give you thumbs-up. Congratulations.

We all know what Ron is really trying to get at with this post....

I think I speak for everyone here when I say: Pleeeeease make the new Indiana Jones movie not suck.

He 'was' an avid gamer? Did he die?

Posted by Ron Gilbert on May 19, 2008 five past noon

I can't vouch for his avid gamerness today since it's been a while since I last talked to him.

This sounds like a eulogy.

I'm not sure but I feel like I read this blogtext somewhere else once.

Ron? :)

Let's have Steven produce a new Indy game, and let's have you doing it!

How's that for a famous fan! Well done, RG!

Now seriously; is the C64 the "definitive" version of MM or were you just saying that?

I keep reading interviews with celebrities that are all like, "yeah man, I play the videogames. I play Halo and that guitar one." Even if you like Halo and Guitar Hero, a real gamer always makes sure to name drop at least one name that shows they aren't a poser. It's the inside wink. The secret handshake. The Jesus fish drawn in the sand. That's how you know. Just like how Myst is code for "My interest does not go deep enough for me to track down games outside of my initial spheres of interest." So Spielberg is saying that he's a gamer, but doesn't obsess over the hobby all that much.

Other code words include:

Ikaruga - I think I'm better than you, but I'm a poser.

World of Warcraft - My interest in online gaming is shallow and uneducated.

God of War / Devil May Cry / Gears of War / Ninja Gaiden - I'm an insecure teenager who lives out my masculine power fantasies through big budgets and button mashing (which I've convinced myself is actually skill).

Goldeneye / System Shock 2 - I have been in love and known bliss, but I can't let go.

Any import only game - I'm really into my hobby, have seen sights you can only dream of, but I've taken it too far and now can only connect with other gamers as far gone as I.

Halo / Guitar Hero / Super Smash Bros - My friends make me play games with them.

Mario Kart / Mario Party - My girlfriend makes me play games with her.

Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren - I'm a masochist, and that makes me a better gamer than you.

Final Fantasy 7 - I played my first rpg on the Playstation.

Super Mario Bros 3 - I secretly think the Wizard is the best movie ever.

Psychonauts - I'm indie, man. Corporate gaming is the devil.

- And, of course, publisher code words -

Episodic Gaming - We hope to make money off you more frequently by doing less work through a controlled, addictive substance.

Downloadable Content - We hope to make more money off you without lifting a finger.

Immersion - We spent a lot of money on graphics and couldn't afford to put in any actual gameplay.

Casual - We don't respect you as a gamer at all.

Hardcore - You are a 15-24 year old male with a lot of free time and disposable income.

2D - Portable game

World War II - We have a book on World War II... with pictures.

Physics Engine - You will marvel like a child at your ability to throw crates around and be blind to glaring gameplay issues.

Euphoria - It's the whiffle-ball-to-the-nutsack version of a Physics Engine.

Procedural Content - We'll be selling expansions to Spore for a million years.

PC Gaming - PC What now?

Copy Protection - Move to consoles, you pirate.

Goldeneye / System Shock 2 - I have been in love and known bliss, but I can't let go.

Oh, so true.

Any diagnostic for the Ace Attorney games, or Lemmings?

He said Monkey Island too. That must mean something more. :)

I tried Boom Blox the other day, played with a friend. Its funny how you can look at it and think it's just a simple jenga-like game, nothing new, maybe even seems boring, but when you start playing it, especially with a friend, you realize it's actually a lot of fun.

The animal cruetly in many of Spielbergs films leave much to be desired.... Other than that, good on him!

Posted by Ciantic on May 19, 2008 quarter past two pm

What is your plan? I mean you are speaking of Spielberg as part of past.

(Yea I know, he couldn't guess whether he still does so, for those who can't understand joke!)

Posted by Pandan on May 19, 2008 three pm

Yeah, ok, it can be a good thing to get away from games every once in a while.
But seriously, people need to play more games.

Just my opinion.

Bumped into Spielberg at E3 in 2000, he was escorting some kids (I assumed nieces and nephews) around to show the games. The kids were more noticeable actually, since it was a rare sight at E3 up til then.

His body guards were not friendly to our camera-person, who wasn't even aiming it at him. But in contrast to the other 'celebrities' that show up to these events, he seemed a lot less red carpet and more intent on the games.

Does he know the secret? 'cause i wouldn't mind killing him to know it :P

That is it Ron! Jus another post and that awfull pie-day post will go to the next page!

It's funny that a man who once denounced the gaming medium as an artform due to its inability to make you cry (despite the arbitrary nature of that condition, not to mention the fact that many would disagree with the assertion anyway) is now behind a puzzle game. Could it be that he has realized that gaming has strength in unique forms of interactivity which other mediums are not capible of, and not in emulating the medium of film? Or is he actually brilliant enough to make knocking blocks over a tearjerking experience?

:p

Have you ever thought about writing a book with stories from the old times at Lucasfilms?
Lately I've been reading really good stories about Commodore, Amiga, Atari, Activision and the people who used to work there and I can't get enough of them.
You can count me (and I bet most of your readers here) for one copy if that ever happens.
Cheers.

Spielberg! that's the second biggest movie director I've ever seen... :-DD

I see what you did there...

Also, I join the "please Indiana Jones Movie, don't suck" group

The GA 'The Dig' was based on a Spilberg's story. It's one of the most amazing GA ever (after MI, of course).

Maybe Spielberg actually plays more games than Ron himself...

"What I'm Playing...
Nothing right now"

Man, that's been there in the homepage for months! I thought you had to be a gamer to design good games, come on Ron, spend a bit more time playing, and less time doing... whatever you do ;P

Posted by Sqorgar on May 23, 2008 twenty five past six pm

"What I'm Playing...
Mind Games."

Whoa, i imagine a silly version of Orlando Bloom playing Guybrush running for his life with a gigant ball chasing him. Escaping in a DeLorean with 3 pieces of map, arriving in the jurassic ages with Penelope Cruz as Elaine Marley slapping his face, for no reason, then a reanimated TRex pursues them to eat their asses, and they realise after that, that they never got back from the future. Instead they are in a Dinosaur amusement park when  John Leguizamo playing Largo thanks to tremendous mistake in the character selection.
But they ignore him just like in the real life. So then it comes rogger Rabbit and ET playing Le Chuck and then its all a huge maddness but it wont matter because people in the cinema will miss that part while they'll start to call they lawyers to sue spielberg because no one diserves to see a big moving image of john leguizamo while eating popcorn.

Anyway, hang in there infomercials!!

"My kids?"
Isn't Spielberg 60-65 or something? How old are his kids, exactly?
Shouldn't he have had grandchildren by now?
