The Tale of the Scurvy Raider

Aug 5, 2009 twenty five past six pm

Aye, arg, gar! Pull up a peg leg and have a seat, for me be tell'n the tale o' the Scurvy Raider, the finest pirate ship t' sail the sea.   Lost one dark and stormy eve, near eighteen years ago, all her crew feared dead or worse.  Arrr, but this tale be not ha'in' a sad endin', for the Scurvy Raider has returned t' port with a mighty tale t' tell. The tale o' a dark and stormy eve near eighteen years ago.

OK, you know what?  Typing Pirate is hard.

Back when I was working at Lucasfilm, I used to have a giant Lego pirate ship.  It sat across from my desk on this low end table and when the nights would grow long and the work day became tiring I would look over at the Scruvy Raider and it would remind me of what we were building; it would remind me of the soul of this game called Monkey Island.

When I left Lucasfilm the Lego pirate ship mysteriously disappeared.  I remember cleaning out my office and saying my goodbyes then noticing the Lego pirate ship was gone.  I asked around but no one knew what happened to it.  It was simply gone, lost at sea, never to be seen again...

...until...

A few days ago when a giant package arrive at my door step.  I carefully opened it to find this inside:

Attached to it was a note scribbled on LucasArts stationary that simply said "We found your pirate ship".

Thanks Guys!!!

The Scurvy Raider II has come home, sailing into port for a reunion that onlookers called teary-eyed and joyful.  It will once again become a beacon of light into the soul of what we are making.

Wow, I can't believe they found it 18 years later, it must feel great to have it back!

I think they got him a new one based on the box and that he called it Scurvy Raider II.  Cool!

firstly, i'm a huge fan of your monkey island games, mr. gilbert. and secondly, i have that pirate ship too! i had it as a kid, and it's actually still assembled (although under a layer of dust) all these years later. i've actually been considering taking it apart, washing the pieces, and reassembling it for a few days now. this post might just be the inspiration i needed to actually go ahead with that. :p

Holy frozen with liquid nitrogen and then used as a short range weapon crap!

This entry combined two of my most favourite things from my childhood - Monkey Island and Lego Pirates. All it needs now is a reference to G1 Transformers. Did Transformers have any influence on the development of Monkey Island, Ron?

Whose signatures are scribbled all over the box?  I presume LucasArts employees of yesteryear?

Posted by Ralph on Aug 6, 2009 half past midnight

Brilliant. Mysterious things are afoot at Lucasarts these days. :)

Those are great news. But please, please don't let Tt make a Lego Monkey Island. (Please).

Posted by Daniel on Aug 6, 2009 quarter to five am

Now there is a tale to truly warm one's cockles.

And yeah, whose signature is that?

I have your ship and your crew Gilbert

Posted by Haggis on Aug 6, 2009 twenty past six am

Wow, that's awesome.

I used to have one of those LEGO pirate ships too... I used to sail it across the table, until one day, it sailed over the edge of the table... and broke up in what seemed to be thousands of little pieces. I still get sad when I think about it. One day, I keep telling myself, I will get a new pirate ship, and then I'll just proudly display it, without sailing it anywhere. Especially over the edges of tables.

Posted by Daniel on Aug 6, 2009 quarter to seven am

You do know it's possible to rebuild it … ?

Posted by Haggis on Aug 7, 2009 ten past five am

I know, I know... but over the years, I just lost so many pieces (not to mention the instruction booklet!). And at the time I didn't feel like, nor did I think of, taking apart the entire ship, being just a wee lad.

"Gentleman, you can rebuild it. You have the Lego parts. You have the capability to build the world's coolest pirate ship. A LEGO ship will be that ship. Better than it was before. Better, stronger, faster."

yeah, my cousin have a pirate ship but it was from playmobil, when i was a kid i steal the sea turtles lol, i was so jealous of him for that toy, some year later i steal his micro machines, lol, i always love lego but my parents say "it so expensive" i live with it.

For one brief, brilliant moment I thought that Lego had released a Monkey Island branded set... how class would that not be? Imagine the second biggest Lego Monkey Head you've ever seen, complete with hellish-mushroom lego bricks...

Posted by jp-30 on Aug 7, 2009 twenty to five am

That's the thing with LEGO. You can buy their official generic Pirates sets, then make your own ***** Monkey Island scenes & minifigs.

We all like him even better when he's working on a Monkey Island game!

Lego + Monkey Island = My beloved childhood.
It's the neverending, invaluable replayability that makes
this combo a win-win experience.

Imagine how they came to that thought...

"The Lego Ship Ron had"
"What about it?"
"I want it." duh, NO

Pirates!

Hey, Lucasfilm just came out with A guybrush Lechuck maquette, and I saw it in the star wars store.  What gibs with not posting anything about it.:)  Ron, Do you have this maquette, yet?  And also, fans are able to see your fingerprints all o'er the new monkey series, but how much time did you spend on the story and outline.  It makes fans such as me nervouse that you attended maybe one short meeting and then that was it.  Are alot of your ideas present in the series?
