Amsterdam Meet-up postmortem

May 5, 2005 ten to eleven am

About 15 people showed up and braved the cold weather before we found an indoor place to continue the adventure game talk.  Judging from the extrapolated sample of people that came, I can safely say that 100% of gamers want more adventure games.  These are the kind of hard statistics that a publisher can bank on.

Thanks everyone for showing up.  It avoided me the embarrassment of creating a fictitious account of the meet-up when no one showed.

Posted by Hullabaloo on May 5, 2005 half past eleven am

Is it me, or is everybody saying "Yarrrr!!!"?

Posted by Ron Gilbert on May 5, 2005 half past eleven am

No, it's not just you.  That is exactly what everyone was saying...funny you could tell that.

Posted by Minty on May 5, 2005 five to noon

Nice to see somebody got into the whole pirate spirit of the thing with an eye patch.

Posted by Francesco on May 5, 2005 ten past noon

Are you in the photo, Ron?

Posted by Wisse Stolk on May 5, 2005 quarter past noon

Nope, sorry, Ron isn't in it. I am though..

It was really great meeting you, Ron, and all these other people. Thanks for signing my map of Amsterdam :D. I hope the meeting in London is will turn out to be just as great as this one.

Thanks Ron for sharing your time with us, and I hope to see you on my website (http://www.ninqualda.net) someday soon!

Greetings, Wisse

Jesus, the Dutch are doing something right with girl gamers. That's way more than are supposed to be coming to the London meetup.

Posted by Kingzjester on May 6, 2005 twenty past eight am

I would just like to point out that Rodi is not a girl.

Hey Ron, I really had a great time!
You're a great example for us storytellers! :)
The comic I wanted to show to you (About the first person shooter hero) can be found in Dutch on www.Adventure-Island.nl. Paco is putting the english version (in a rar) on his server, so that you can download the english version :)

Again, thanks for the day, and I hope to see you again!

)(*&^%$#@!
Why did I choose to stay in Egypt instead of going to Europe few weeks earlier? Well, maybe I will have my chance in Paris... :)

Posted by Paco on May 5, 2005 quarter to one pm

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the great meeting, it was most excellent and inspiring.
Glad to hear you like what I am doing with the Monkey 1 comic.
When it's completely done, I'll be glad to give you a copy.

Hope you'll like those DVDs we gave you.
Good luck with your current (and future) project(s) and enjoy the rest of your stay in Amsterdam!

Oh and watch out for those semi-naked men climbing in ropes.

Posted by Ron Gilbert on May 5, 2005 twenty five to three pm

Posted by steve on May 6, 2005 ten to six am

It never fails: Gilbert shows up, and someone gets naked. And it's usually a guy.

Posted by Nacente on May 8, 2005 five past two pm

i saw that man too, when I went to Amsterdam hahaha

Posted by CaliMonk on May 5, 2005 five to one pm

Hi everyone,

It was great and alot of fun, it was a little odd in the start but it ended up being just great. Thanks alot for the meeting, are you going to post more photo's btw, i would like some more :) (Judging the fact that you took one right in my face :-P)

Anyway, thanks alot for the meeting and of course the fact that you and your girlfriend (Forgot her name :-( ) for paying for our drinks, that was really nice of you.

Enjoy your stay in Amsterdam and London, hope to see your RPG someday!

Pity the shops were closed when I left, because I had wanted to buy my promised copy of Pajama Sam (hopefully the English dub is on there too!) and immediately rush back to have it signed. No flimsy paper scrap for me, no sir! Real Authentic Ron Gilbert Games (RARGG hereafter), only the best.

That said, I take pity on our German friend who now surely endures the 4,5 hour trip back to Bonn. It shows a level of character and nerdism to do that. Yarr I say!

But Ron, it was great talking to you. Surprisingly, the conversation went in many direction besides games and more games. We also chatted about Dutch politics, American topography and, okay, games. Things got weird when some naked old guy in a string decided it was necessary to climb a rope and pull off acrobatic antics in the air. It was weird seeing him in clothes after that. It just didn't feel right.

Posted by DasJan on May 6, 2005 twenty five past six am

Yarr!

Good thing the conversation wasn't about Dutch topology and American politics, which would have been much more boring ;)

And yeah, when that naked guy was suddenly dressed it was like going 3D! ;)

Posted by PaulK on May 5, 2005 quarter to two pm

I couldn't make it :'(

Posted by Marek on May 5, 2005 ten to two pm

Nice meeting you all :) I had a lot of fun!

Posted by Scummbuddy on May 5, 2005 two pm

It's obvious that this was endorsed by Coca~Cola.
-----
Yarrr, I'm just jealous.

Posted by Rodi on May 5, 2005 five past two pm

We actually drank more wine than Cola. I even drank rosé for the first time. It was nice, tangy.

Posted by Alexander on May 5, 2005 five past two pm

Hey, seems I missed a lot by being late. It was still worth the trip (3 hours in my case), though my English collapsed in an incomprehensible mess as always when it gets interesting -- so I just grinned like an idiot the whole time.

To Ron and his girlfriend: The sequel (in a way) to Samurai Fiction is Stereo Future (SF in both cases). But be warned, it's quite strange.

Posted by s_nodice on May 5, 2005 three pm

At times like these, I wish I was dutch.

I'm really happy that all of you had fun, maybe I'll meet Ron Gilbert some-day... maybe some-day (sigh).

Posted by DasJan on May 5, 2005 quarter to four pm

Ron, thanks a lot for the great meeting! It was one of these special moments that don't happen often. I arrived safely in Germany and still am blown away by that naked man. We don't have these things in Germany. Hope to see you at Ronfest 2006 somewhere closer :)

Posted by Ralph Egas on May 6, 2005 half past midnight

Hi all,

It's always nice to observe the fact that adventure gaming is still alive, at least in our minds. Surely we all would like storytelling games to be brought back into our economy so badly that I think it's about time we actually did something about it.

Ron, my appreciations go out to you and your girlfriend for giving hope to us all by spending time, money, patience and great stories in your spare time.

I'll have a demo of my newly fashioned point & click - style engine finished real soon. I'll post it to you once it's done and then I hope we can work something out in terms of a small demo game with a mini-script.

Great meeting y'all and maybe till we meet again.

Cheers,

Ralph

Are there any other pics online?

Posted by Wisse Stolk on May 6, 2005 ten to noon

You know on those photo's, the guy standing next to Ron at the Cafetaria is me :D

Posted by m0ds on May 6, 2005 twenty past seven am

Yeahhh! Special guest Marek was there!

See some of you Sunday, plus special guest
Ron with any luck!!

Posted by starmonkey on May 6, 2005 quarter past eight am

is it just me, or does the white handbag strap on the girl on the far right make it look like her arm is floating away from her body? (because it blends into the background)

Posted by some fat elvis lookalike on May 6, 2005 half past eight am

see, i knew that if i kept asking someone would take photo's

Posted by Tarim(the eyepatched one) on May 6, 2005 twenty to noon

Hey guys,

I really enjoyed being with all you fellow geeks and our guru Ron. Though It was a bit noisy and cold and I couldn't see half of it, we still managed to get some interesting conversations going. It was amazing to see what people would do to get Ron's attention...(yes it even included climbing a pole and waving around in nothing but a string).
I hope te see you people on future occasions again. And to Ron and his girlfriend(sorry I didn't get your name either...) NEXT TIME THE PHOOD AND THE WINE'S ON US!!! we owe you ;)

I'll post my pictures this week-end

Cheers,

Tarim/Youval

Posted by Rocher on May 6, 2005 five to noon

So, Ron, would you pay a visit to us in Spain as well?

Posted by Steven van de Graaf on May 6, 2005 twenty five past four pm

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I can't believe that I missed this! I was in Amsterdam just a week earlier and it's only a 30 minute trip for me! This sucks so much that I didn't know about this! OH F*CK!!

Please tell me that there's going to be a repeat? Asides the random folk from VALVe, you're really the only game developer that I'd like to meet and be generally geeky to..

Now I shall never be able to squeeze the true secret of Monkey Island out of you!

NoooOOooOoOoOo!!!!1111

Posted by CaliMonk on May 6, 2005 ten to six pm

He'll never anwser that, unless he gets the rights to Monkey Island and makes the sequal.

Or when we put him in the same room with the naked guy and lock them up.

Posted by Rodi on May 7, 2005 quarter to two am

What good would it do us if the old naked guy knows the Secret to Monkey Island?

Posted by grant on May 7, 2005 half past four pm

Then we could squeeze it out of the old naked guy?

Posted by Jorrin QueZTone Quest on May 7, 2005 twenty to seven pm

i'd rather not touch a nekkid guy :O

Posted by grant on May 8, 2005 two am

I'm not sure what I wouldn't do for the true Secret of Monkey Island...but touching the naked dude is probably one of those things.

Posted by DasJan on May 8, 2005 twenty five to three am

What's the problem? Actually he felt very soft, but don't think I'll tell ya the secret!

Posted by Wisse Stolk on May 8, 2005 quarter to eleven am

That's disgusting :P

Posted by Iris on May 7, 2005 twenty five to three am

It was nice meeting you all in Amsterdam.

I thought it would be fun to create a simple drawing of the group photo in pirate style. I just hope everyone is still recognizable (including the ones that weren't in the original).

Here it is: http://home.versatel.nl/crimthan/stuff/amsterdam_meeting.gif

Posted by Rodi on May 7, 2005 five to three am

Wow Iris! That looks super! You really have a nice style going there!

Posted by Wisse Stolk on May 7, 2005 half past three am

That is so cool!! I love us in pirate style, though my only pirate thingy is a sword.

This drawing Rocks!

Ps. It's Ron on the left and his girlfriend on the right, right?

Posted by CaliMonk on May 7, 2005 half past three am

Thats some sweet stuff!

Posted by Junaid on May 7, 2005 ten to nine am

Hey cool drawing! Thanks for chopping my hand off :)! No really, cool drawing!

Posted by Ron Gilbert on May 7, 2005 quarter to eleven am

HA!  That's great!

Posted by DasJan on May 8, 2005 twenty five to three am

Yeah, cool pic! Great that Ron and his girlfriend made it on it. It's also nice that on that drawing I look like someone who looks good ;)

But guys, I want to see photos! The real stuff :)

Posted by some fat elvis lookalike on May 8, 2005 five to ten am

Posted by Tarim a.k.a. The One eyed falafel Guy on May 8, 2005 quarter past seven pm

wow, that picture is awesome, Iris! Great job :)  Can I use it for my meeting picture gallery?

I've got 13 pictures and I'm currently working on a little galery page, but in the meantime, I stumbled upon a picture which was so full of narrative potency that I had to fill in my version of the story.

If you can think of something witty to fit into the balloons, please mail me, so I can add them to the picture and hang it in my gallery:

Wahaaahaaa, that's brilliant. I'm the guy who says he's afraid Ron will find out about the cardboard fries :D

Posted by DasJan on May 9, 2005 five to three am

ROFL!!!! That's hilarious!

By the way, here is my proof that there was voodoo with us...

Posted by Iris on May 9, 2005 twenty to noon

Sure, no problem. I don't mind if you add the picture to your gallery. I'm glad you all like it. :)

Wish I had a suggestion for the balloons, but I'm not good at this. Though I think the stuff you came up with is really funny.

Posted by hanuman on May 8, 2005 quarter to midnight

did you smoke weed there ron?
You can answer honestly, cause i quitted smokin, but have nothing against it.
I'm only interested

Posted by Tramb on May 9, 2005 one am

Hehehe more people wearing Lonsdale in Amsterdam than in London
Skinheads of the Monkey Island?
Putt putt on the terraces?

Posted by CaliMonk on May 9, 2005 half past four am

Since when does a sweater decide what someone is like? I wear Lonsdale because i like the clothes, just because some idiots wear them as well doesn't mean i have to throw mine away....

Posted by The One eyed falafel Guy on May 10, 2005 half past nine am

Okay I'm done with my picture gallery!

You can find it on: http://sa.arandoir.com/gilbert.html

have fun,

Tarim

Posted by Wisse Stolk on May 10, 2005 ten past ten pm

Cool! Nice layout and stuff. But you should open the pictures in another window, in that way you can easily go back to the site..

Cool anyway! One-Eyed Falafel Guy!

Posted by Macerlask on May 12, 2005 half past four pm

Hey Ron, you should visit a more Tropical place, something exotic like Monkey Island for your next destiny, something like M… MEXICO, I’m sure that in Mexico are more Monkey Island’s Fans and Ron Gilbert’s Groupies than me,  you know, you don’t need to go to far like London or Amsterdam to meet Fans. Most of the Time Latin America is forgotten and that hurts, even it’s closer than Europe.

...sorry about my bad English :(

Posted by Reagan 'The Rage' Hart on Sep 19, 2005 half past six pm

COULD ANYBODY PLEASE TELL US WHERE TO DOWNLOAD THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND 256 VGA CD???

Posted by Wisse Stolk on Sep 20, 2005 twenty five past one am
