DeathSpank Interview
May 12, 2009 one pm
RPGCodex just published an interview I did about DeathSpank. Best to go check it out before their servers go down. I also said something I probably shouldn't have, so OMG, now you have to go read it.
I've also come to the conclusion that one of the pillars that holds up game design is post-it notes. Computers are great tools if you want to order books or keep track of your recipes, but there is nothing better than printing out a big map and covering it with post-it notes.
"Why are there no post-it notes in that section!?!"
"Quick, someone put some post-it notes over there. Damn-it! We're making a game here!"

There is an alarming lack of Anachronox 2 in this world.

Mental note for the industry journalists: arrange the posibility of a second round of questions, if the first batch throws interesting content.

This comment page should also be organised as post-it notes!

"Contains profanity" to me means "is unable to maintain your interest without constant swearing".
"Contains nudity" means "is unable to maintain your interest without including a gratuitous shower scene".
"Contains Michael Bay situations" means "it's based on a kid's cartoon, so we're obviously going to include Megan Fox doing her best Naughty Car Girls 2007 pose".

but it also sounds like it's going to take some more time...
also i wonder if now that Deathspank is a "full" game instead of episodic, wether it will still be downloadable...

It makes me smile that, despite all the technology involved in producing... even an amateur adventure game like mine (2 MacBooks, Adobe Flash CS4, Wacom tablets, you name it)... it's still cheap little 2 x 2 squares of colored paper that I rely on daily to keep the ideas rolling.

Damn, this is too bloody open-minded for the RPGCodex. Everyone should know that even Baldur's Gate is not hardcore enough. It's a mistake to even mention this game as an example of RPGs.
You're giving them no ground for discussion, you pighead!

I'm sick of those fantasy-MMOs because the music doesn't impress me at all and the stories suck. It's like they got a "How to tell a good MMO-story"- guide with brackets telling you what to do. It always begins with: Welcome to ______[enter world name here], young [optional interchangable with "brave"] ______ [enter player's title/race/name here]. ______ [Ages/Centuries/Eras/xxx Years] ago, a ______ [woman/man/god] called ______ [enter first NVC (non visible character) name here) ______ [created/destroyed/saved] the world ______ [enter world name here, again]. That's all you need to know. Now go out, kick some ass and talk with all NPCs when I'm ordering you to do so. Ask neighbor players [optional interchangeable with "Nerve other players with additional noob behavior"] to help you out with gold, because the game is created that way, that you must cheat to get money and MMOs got no commando line and the chat has no cheats commands implemented. At level 10 you'll be crying because everybody wants to kick your butt (unless you already cheated or visited our item-shop and got super stuff that makes you look strong... and smell that way, too). Try to defend you verbally. If you win, have fun, if not, get lost.
It's good that you, Ron, say FPS-creators are immature. But isn't this a working formula to reach other immatures that the world consist of like a tenth of the playing human population? Now if you create content for the matures, whose recent gaming experiences (these days) are lower than the immature ones, how will you reach them?
What I noticed in Germany: 3 Years ago, there was nearly no advertising about gaming on private TV channels. Now the Big N, S & M promote their consoles and sometimes their exclusive game titles. There's a change in perceiving the gamer's world, it's more public now. Still there are not many adults getting into real gaming. Some of them begin with their stupid "Learn English" exercises and they call it a game. For me it's an interactive learning tool and no game. Those who try a hard core game, leave it after they finished the game on easy mode.
Aprospos easy mode: Is there an easy and an extreme hardcore puzzle-filled thrilling killing not chilling but slowly rilling mode (with more puzzles and a "Three Headed Monkey" appearance)?

That was a nice interview cause it gives a little more info in Deathspank, which I have been dying to hear. From what I have read I can say that I will really enjoy it.
Coming Soonerish... is driving me mad but no matter what, its worth the wait I am sure.
Thanks for staying original in todays market!
Enjoy making the game! I would.
