DeathSpank Interview

May 12, 2009 one pm

RPGCodex just published an interview I did about DeathSpank.  Best to go check it out before their servers go down.  I also said something I probably shouldn't have, so OMG, now you have to go read it.

I've also come to the conclusion that one of the pillars that holds up game design is post-it notes.   Computers are great tools if you want to order books or keep track of your recipes, but there is nothing better than printing out a big map and covering it with post-it notes.

"Why are there no post-it notes in that section!?!"

"Quick, someone put some post-it notes over there.  Damn-it!  We're making a game here!"

Finally! a spank-fix.

Posted by Lindsey on May 12, 2009 five past six pm

I'm glad you said it.  Someone had to.

Posted by elj on May 12, 2009 half past six pm

Here I was hoping that "I also said something I probably shouldn't have" meant that you had revealed the secret of Monkey Island.

If anybody offers you $10 million to make either Diablo 4 or Anachronox 2 please go with the latter.
There is an alarming lack of Anachronox 2 in this world.

Posted by mashakasha on May 12, 2009 quarter to eight pm

i agree. we anachronox too because fun to be had. great moments in joy. and excitement ensues with anachronox too.

i agree that i do think it is great to be.

yay! i enjoy commenting.

Posted by Sonny on May 16, 2009 twenty five past four am

Wait, what. That Anachronox 2 question came out of nowhere. I loved Anachronox and it's one of the best games I've ever played, but where the hell did that question come from? Is Ron a fan too?

Posted by Novack on May 12, 2009 twenty five to eight pm

Answer to question number 5, clearly denotes that the interview was offline.

Mental note for the industry journalists: arrange the posibility of a second round of questions, if the first batch throws interesting content.

Posted by Farge-TV on May 12, 2009 eleven pm

Yes. And try not to structure the interview as a series of questions with short answers. Write a coherent story out of it, or it becomes a chore to read.

Posted by Mo on May 12, 2009 five to eleven pm

Was the seamless transitions/no loading mentioned before? Getting very excited about this now. :)

Posted by G on May 13, 2009 ten past midnight

OMG, you said breast.

giggling

Posted by qrter on May 13, 2009 half past four pm

That's probably what Ron shouldn't have said OMG!

Posted by Ylmer on May 13, 2009 five past one am

Hey, glad you post'-it.

This comment page should also be organised as post-it notes!

I like the bit about how things are only ever rated 'M' because people think it's funny to talk about boobs. It's a sign of genuine talent when someone can succeed within child friendly restrictions.

"Contains profanity" to me means "is unable to maintain your interest without constant swearing".

"Contains nudity" means "is unable to maintain your interest without including a gratuitous shower scene".

"Contains Michael Bay situations" means "it's based on a kid's cartoon, so we're obviously going to include Megan Fox doing her best Naughty Car Girls 2007 pose".

Good interview. I really hope DeathSpank is a big hit and allows you to keep doing games the Ron Gilbert-way...

Posted by Thomas Egebęk on May 13, 2009 quarter past two am

The game sounds awesome :)

but it also sounds like it's going to take some more time...

also i wonder if now that Deathspank is a "full" game instead of episodic, wether it will still be downloadable...

Posted by Stevo on May 13, 2009 five to eleven am

I wonder if the "Making a game where two girls kiss doesn't make you an 'artist'," comment was a jab at David Jaffe.

Posted by qrter on May 13, 2009 half past four pm

I think it was a jab at just about everyone in the mainstream gaming industry.

Posted by Barry on May 13, 2009 eleven am

Ah it's great to hear the branching conversations will be in there.  Really looking forward to this game.

Any idea if you'll have something to show at E3?

Posted by Mario on May 13, 2009 half past eleven am

I'll glue my iPhone and 'post-it' on my fridge.

Posted by Karl on May 13, 2009 twenty to one pm

I don't want to read the interview. Can somebody sum up the thing Ron shouldn't have said, but did?

Posted by qrter on May 13, 2009 twenty five to five pm

Something about breasts. It was very, very dirty.

Posted by Karl on May 24, 2009 ten past eight am

Oh my...! :o

Posted by Alfonso Maruccia on May 13, 2009 two pm

Well, so far we know DeathSpank won't be episodic, will have stats and dialogues, will have chickens roaming around and ripping monsters apart.... The only thing we should have known for sure we still ignore it, namely when the damn DeathSpank thingy will hit the shelves and my PC's HD.

Mr. Ron Gilbert, please explain your unwillingness to give a glimpse for a timeline :-P

Posted by Bjorn on May 14, 2009 five to two am

I rather Ron took all the time he needs to make an excellent game rather than rushing.

Posted by Trevor on May 14, 2009 twenty five to eleven am

You rush a miracle man, you get rotten miracles. Miracle Max

Posted by JH on May 14, 2009 twenty five to six am

Wow, this sounds promising.  Thanks for the update on what to expect...or will there be more at E3 next month?!?  Please move to have this released on all consoles including the Wii, downloadable or in store.  Can't wait to see some actual gameplay footy!

Posted by Toryn on May 14, 2009 five to nine pm

So true about the post-it notes! I've been working on an iPhone / iPod touch game for a year now and have this geeky setup that I call "The Idea Door" (the back of my bedroom closet door). It's divided into color coded sections for characters, locations, items, and puzzles... and covered in related colored post-it notes. (A level of  organization and anal behavior that would leave even the most obsessive compulsive person happy.)

It makes me smile that, despite all the technology involved in producing... even an amateur adventure game like mine (2 MacBooks, Adobe Flash CS4, Wacom tablets, you name it)... it's still cheap little 2 x 2 squares of colored paper that I rely on daily to keep the ideas rolling.

Posted by sonsou on May 14, 2009 twenty five to eleven pm

you suck

Posted by Toryn on May 14, 2009 five past eleven pm

Hey, not fair, you're using the Sword Master's insults!

Posted by Karl on May 15, 2009 twenty five to eight am

Don't worry about that useless tit sonsou, he's just jealous because you're skilled enough to make a game, while he's not. Probably just another 15 year old.

Posted by chaco on May 15, 2009 ten past three pm

and probably he`s gay

Posted by Joe on May 21, 2009 five to one pm

Of course he's gay! I mean, would a straight guy be arrogant? It's unheard of! Those damn gays... so imperfect aren't they?

Saaaaarcasm

Posted by Kenny on May 22, 2009 ten past three pm

Sarcasm is often associated with something that makes you smile or laugh. So what you said can't be sarcasm. It's just an annoying comment.

Posted by Joe on May 22, 2009 ten to four pm

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

Posted by Kenny on May 23, 2009 quarter past seven pm

It's true! *running away sobbing*

Posted by Rodolfo on May 16, 2009 twenty to six pm

Release DeathSpank already, 'bout time! I seriously hope you're not in the post-it-note production phase anymore!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Karl on May 16, 2009 twenty to seven pm

Will DeathSpank come out as an app for the iPhone/iPod touch? Have you thought about it?

Posted by Corto on May 17, 2009 five past three pm

"I prefer stories are told to me while I play the game. Some of the older games such as Baldur's Gate do a pretty good job of this. Zelda also does this well."

Damn, this is too bloody open-minded for the RPGCodex. Everyone should know that even Baldur's Gate is not hardcore enough. It's a mistake to even mention this game as an example of RPGs.
You're giving them no ground for discussion, you pighead!

Posted by Canadian on May 17, 2009 ten to four pm

Give it to 'im Corto! Spank him!

Posted by AndyBundy on May 18, 2009 five to three am

And again no question about the music in game. WTH? Music is one of the most important features while playing a game besides the story. Even if the game has a good story it may lack in atmosphere transported by music and sound effects (and somewhat by those multicolored pixels). Games with no atmosphere are no fun anymore (which fits to so many games right now).

I'm sick of those fantasy-MMOs because the music doesn't impress me at all and the stories suck. It's like they got a "How to tell a good MMO-story"- guide with brackets telling you what to do. It always begins with: Welcome to ______[enter world name here], young [optional interchangable with "brave"]  ______ [enter player's title/race/name here]. ______ [Ages/Centuries/Eras/xxx Years] ago, a ______ [woman/man/god] called ______ [enter first NVC (non visible character) name here) ______ [created/destroyed/saved] the world ______ [enter world name here, again]. That's all you need to know. Now go out, kick some ass and talk with all NPCs when I'm ordering you to do so. Ask neighbor players [optional interchangeable with "Nerve other players with additional noob behavior"] to help you out with gold, because the game is created that way, that you must cheat to get money and MMOs got no commando line and the chat has no cheats commands implemented. At level 10 you'll be crying because everybody wants to kick your butt (unless you already cheated or visited our item-shop and got super stuff that makes you look strong... and smell that way, too). Try to defend you verbally. If you win, have fun, if not, get lost.

It's good that you, Ron, say FPS-creators are immature. But isn't this a working formula to reach other immatures that the world consist of like a tenth of the playing human population? Now if you create content for the matures, whose recent gaming experiences (these days) are lower than the immature ones, how will you reach them?

What I noticed in Germany: 3 Years ago, there was nearly no advertising about gaming on private TV channels. Now the Big N, S & M promote their consoles and sometimes their exclusive game titles. There's a change in perceiving the gamer's world, it's more public now. Still there are not many adults getting into real gaming. Some of them begin with their stupid "Learn English" exercises and they call it a game. For me it's an interactive learning tool and no game. Those who try a hard core game, leave it after they finished the game on easy mode.

Aprospos easy mode: Is there an easy and an extreme hardcore puzzle-filled thrilling killing not chilling but slowly rilling mode (with more puzzles and a "Three Headed Monkey" appearance)?

Posted by Barb on May 18, 2009 twenty past ten am

Please don't run amok in your school.

Posted by AndyBundy on May 18, 2009 half past noon

Amok is a sensitive topic in Germany right now. I love Hildegard Knef's quote "I've got a good formula to keep fit. I'm running amok every day." It's pity that those post cards don't sell that good these days.

Ohh btw: You noticed the jokes, right?

Posted by BigBrother on May 19, 2009 one pm

No I did not.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition for the Xbox 360???
http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/05/the_secret_of_monkey_island_co.php

Ron do you know if this is pure rubbish or if theres some truth behind it?

Posted by Guillermo on May 22, 2009 half past two pm

Is this a typo: "Money Island 3 situation", or was just the thing you said that you shouldn't? Anyway is funny

Posted by Kelly on May 23, 2009 ten past seven am

Your avatar looks like a bernhardiner dog.

Posted by Jon on May 24, 2009 twenty five past five am

Everybody chime in... RELEASE IT RELEASE IT RELEASE IT RELEASE...

Posted by Mojo on May 26, 2009 five past two pm

Just wondering, isn't it the the good place, and the good time to announce your coming at the E3 for VERY important stuff you can't talk about yet ???

Posted by Julian bmeijer on May 27, 2009 ten am

Hi Ron!

That was a nice interview cause it gives a little more info in Deathspank, which I have been dying to hear. From what I have read I can say that I will really enjoy it.
Coming Soonerish... is driving me mad but no matter what, its worth the wait I am sure.
Thanks for staying original in todays market!
Enjoy making the game! I would.

Posted by bishopslikepawn on May 29, 2009 twenty five past eleven pm

Ron blogs as frequently as a married couple has sex.

Posted by Brent on May 30, 2009 quarter to six pm

That's so true. I think even the actual frequency matches.

Posted by MIfan on May 30, 2009 five past midnight

Will DeathSpank be presented on E3?

Posted by Miguel on May 30, 2009 quarter to six pm

Oh no, I think Ron blocked my ip!
