April Fools' Day #7

Apr 1, 2011 twenty five past ten am

Wow, it's hard to believe this is the 7th year of Grumpy Gamer being 100% April Fools' Day free.  It's rare that I've ever done anything for seven strait years, so that should tell you how much I hate April Fools' Day.

I'd also like to add @grumpygamer to the list of things that are 100% April Fools' Days free.

That said, if LucasArts ever allows me to make another Monkey Island, I'm totally announcing it on April 1st, that way you'll know it's not a joke.

I feel sorry for Ron having hateful comments like this posted on his blog.

Just ask Ron what is Monkey Island, chances are that he forgot to stick the note with the answer so he'll be forced to guess

Posted by JohnnyW on Apr 4, 2011 twenty to five am

So?

You'll see...

Posted by April NOT on Apr 1, 2011 five to one pm

If LucasArts ever allows you to make another MI that would be a best-seller, and no-one should download it from TPB (sigh... I kinda fuc??d that up, didn't I?)

Posted by Gabriel H. on Apr 1, 2011 five past one pm

And every year, on April Fools' Day, after checking what great things Google thought of, I check Grumpy Gamer, to see the post pointing out proudly that this year again, it is April Fool's Day free.
For a very brief moment, while the page is loading, I fear that it might have succumbed to peer pressure - but then I finally see the post I longed for, and this tells me that everything is alright, life's still great.

Hey Ron can I friend you on steam?

Posted by Ed on Apr 1, 2011 quarter past six pm

You and the fine people at Double Fine should purchase the Monkey Island license...  or failing that at least harass them regularly with pitches to develop a new entry in the series. I liked Telltale's addition to the saga but it seems about time it came home to gestate in the belly of its biological parent before being reborn.

You fill my soul with hope Ron.

Can't belief I forgot time shift :D

Grumpy Gamer has been my first port of call every April 1st for years. Partly because I enjoy knowing that someone else hates it, and partly because I've always thought that that would be exactly when you'd announce that they'd let you make another MI game :). Also, did you ever post what happened on your playthrough of Monkey 2? Sure you said you'd played through them both but you only ever told us how the first one went!

Posted by Joe Cassara on Apr 2, 2011 quarter past two pm

I don't think we want to see what LucasArts would force you to put into another Monkey Island game. Multiplayer? Realistic 3D combat? Puzzles based on "real world" logic? Pass.

Posted by Guido on Apr 5, 2011 twenty to eight am

You forgot: regenerative health, achievements, matchmaking, kinect and move suport, stereoscopic 3D, bluray, cloud based game saving, game split in DLC's, weapon DLC's, costume DLC's, developed for console and then badly ported for PC one year later,...

did I forget to mention any other stupid thing that the videogames of these days must have to be released?

Posted by moop on Apr 2, 2011 half past eight pm

Well, maybe in reality you luv April fools and you've been pulling this prank over the last 7 years..! ;)

Posted by wise man on Apr 5, 2011 quarter to eight am

I think April 2 should be April Wise Ones' Day. I'm not sure what you should do, but it should be Wise. (Actual wise, not smart-ass wise.)

Posted by Mange on Apr 7, 2011 five to nine am

Hey, you April fooled me this christmas with that curious tweet about buying A Theory of Fun as a christmas gift. I just finished it and heck, what a bore! No Deathspank could ever rise out of those theories.

Posted by Chris on Apr 7, 2011 twenty five past noon

I prey for a new Monkey Island done by you with a budget like the one from Crysis 2. I'm sure it would be the greatest game in history of mankind. Maybe Guybrush could wear a nanosuite to make them produce your Monkey-Game. ;) Hope dies last. :)

Posted by Douchbrush Winwood on Apr 9, 2011 twenty past three am

What about creating a "whole new game" like "Pirates of the Tropic Islands: Curse of the Black Beard" or something. That would be some kind of innovative.
The main protagonist could be called ..... William Burner or Jack Narrow and the best inspiration would shurely come from real Piratesque Things as "On stranger Tides" or the one or other themeparkride.

Posted by Felix on Apr 10, 2011 five to eight am

I hope Lucas Arts will get interested in making the original Monkey Island 3 when your new project will garner some momentum in the press or sales.

Posted by idarwin on Apr 11, 2011 twenty past seven pm

Does anyone know if they are going to make another Maniac Mansion? I just can't believe they stopped at Day of the tentacle (maybe that's better)... but I think that story has some more juice in there.
Best.

It is incredible...
Lucas Arts have got some of the best franchise in the world and in the last 8-5 yeras they have practically accomplished nothing!!!

If I were LA president:
1) Call Ron and allow him to make another 3 Monkey Island games!!!!
2) Make a new great Star Wars RPG (not a MMO)
3) make an incredible Indiana Jones action adventure with puzzle, exploration, dialogue tree and action.
4) Make a new Xwing/wing commander  game (with great plot and characther interaction)
5) Make a new Battlefront
6) Create a great Star War kinet game

It is so difficult?!?!?!?

Posted by Hoffmann on Apr 13, 2011 twenty five past five pm

Yes.

Posted by Chalito on Apr 15, 2011 ten to seven am

What I'd love to see is a new adventure game (be it MI or something else) but done exactly as in the early 90's, like MI2 for example. Same version of scumm, vga colors, same resolution (I loved how they could make guybrush show an expression of being grossed out with just 6 or 7 pixels). Kinda in the same way that Megaman 9 was made on wiiware, made to be exactly like the games in those good old times...

Ron, it's me - you, from the future. Monkey Island 3 on the ipad. No distributor. Use the app store and they will buy it.

Posted by Ron Gilbert on Apr 27, 2011 ten past nine pm

Why do people think I get to decide to make another Monkey Island. If I did, I'd have made it long ago.  Go bug Lucas.

Posted by Hoffmann on Apr 28, 2011 five past four pm

What is his blog?

Posted by Ron Gilbert from the Past on Apr 28, 2011 twenty five to eleven pm

Wow, people are still gonna be bugging me about Monkey Island 20 years from now?  I guess I should just go ahead and make Monkey Island 3 at LucasArts here in 1992.  By the way, what's an ipad?

Posted by MI3 on May 9, 2011 ten to three am

Why should we bug Lucas? If Telltale created TOMI why you cant create MI3?

Posted by Obvious monkey on May 20, 2011 quarter past three pm

Because TellTale have money growing out their asses.

Posted by Serious Man on May 10, 2011 twenty to five am

Ron, why lucas doesn't allow you do it?!?!
Is it possible that LF Management is so blind?!?!

Can we start a petition here on Grumpy Gamers!!!!
What do you think about it?
I mean a REAL petition!!!

Posted by Xigno on Jun 27, 2011 twenty to four pm

Forget MI3...
I consider MI3 (Ron version) just like the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy:
somenthing that everyone dream & desire, something that really exists somewhere (at least on paper or in form of idea), something that could be really done, but it is something that for infinite reasons will never really happend.

The true MI3 is just a mith.
We will never solve the mistery of the secret of monkey island.
And Ron joke we will live forever in the history of the videogame medium.

Thank you Ron!

Posted by Not Really Ron Gilbert from the Future on Apr 29, 2011 quarter to nine pm

Um, I am rubber and you are glue?  I am no match for your keen wit. But to answer your question:

Yes, because it will still be regarded as one of the greatest adventure game series ever made and you'll have made MI 3 by that time.  Actually as not to upset anyone who thinks the other monkey games have anything to do with 1 and 2, you end up calling it 2.5.

Your old article on what it would take to make an adventure game inspired me.   If Telltale can get its hands on the property i know you can  Heck, let us make use of your new pirate flags and go commandeer their operation for an episode or three.

Oh, and an ipad is something steve jobs invented after he mixed a rubber chicken into a pot of captain crunch and awoke hours later to the credits of a next generation episode. Well, maybe it had to do more with the old blotter paper that weird recipe was written on...

Crunch
   Crunch
Crunch
   Crunch
Crunch

Why are people still hung up on another MI game? The first ones were good, that's a given - but - as Ron stated, if he could he would have made a new one by now. I can understand the want for more MI (Sadly I'm still hoping for a Shenmue 3) as they were good fun. But I just don't see another MI happening. Instead I would rather have Ron keep making new and original adventure games.

Posted by Ron for Time Traveler of the Year on Apr 30, 2011 half past ten am

Sure, he can do that too.  But I know he wants to finish his story and right now I'm lost in a mystery world carnival walking around with my dead parents and Ron is the only person who can show me the way out.

What do you think about Kinect Ron? Isnt it a holy grail for adventure games?

Posted by Ron Gilbert on May 19, 2011 twenty five to nine am

Other than for party games, I don't like controllers that force you to dance around your living room.  I like to curl up on the couch to play my games.

Posted by Kinecti4future on May 20, 2011 ten past five am

Just think about what can give Kinect for game industry, and adventure games? You should turn on your imagination and you will see what it can give.

With Kinect you can just say (not boring pointnclick menu) insult right in to face of dirty pirate in a middle of sword fight, you can sit curl up on the couch  and (just for example from Mi  gameplay) simply open a door by your own hand, and then by moving one hand grab some grog, like if you did it in real life. Tihs all can work without any menu or interface for example look for game named Penumbra and you will understand.

Posted by Misunderstood on May 20, 2011 twenty past ten am

You should turn on your brain and understand what Ron intended to say:

He doesn't give a fuck about moving your hands just like in real life.
The whole point is to curl up in your couch with Coke, chips, and simply push buttons with one hand and scratch your crotch with the other one.
That's what I call 'to have fun'.

And yes: I do practice sports when I'm not playing.

Posted by Kinecti4future on May 20, 2011 twenty five past noon

And you will never complite any game like MI by simply pushing buttons. this is not a Rockband. You will fell a sleep with this sort of gameplay and you will get fun by sleeping.

Kinect is great instrument help you to interact with ingame enviroment. Using Kinect in adventure games is next step of evolution for them, like GUI and PnC for text adventures. This is solution for problem of their popularity.

Using Kinect for sport or dancing games is simpliest and stupid way to microsft get money, like mouse was for windows. Games like doom, or Mi and Myst show how it can be used in great games and help to create new genres.

Posted by James on May 21, 2011 quarter to four pm

Don't be daft, nobody ever played Doom with a mouse!

Posted by Killian on Jun 27, 2011 half past three pm

Ron , forget the motion aspect of Kinect...
What about the "Voice Comands" of Kinect?
I really see huge potential in these features!!!

Posted by Obvious monkey on May 20, 2011 twenty five past three pm

Hey Ron, are you looking forward to any of the games being released this year?

Posted by Demetris Thoupis on May 24, 2011 ten to one pm

SPOILERS FOR PIRATES 4

Ok you've been warned if you want Spoilers sorry you are getting some. Ron some questions regarding the link of "Strangers Tide" to MI universe as I have not read the book but saw the latest Pirates movie which is also based on the book and I saw amazing similarities between the MI Universe and this specific movie. First of all we have a voodoo doll! I really thought a dream coming through the MI in a movie and then I snapped out of it. Blackbeard uses a voodoo doll to "persuade" Jack and there is a very very specific scene where you really feel you see the art cover of MI2 and I think is a straight copy!! Even the theme for Blackbeard bares an excellent tingling resemblance to LeChucks theme. Penelope Crus is the personification of Elaine Marley in flesh and bones. Especially after wearing a violet dress type during a dance sequence! I couldn't help thinking OMG MI over and over again in a good sense. The search for the fountain of youth was very interesting and the island was something close to MI. So I guess the secret of MI is the youth passage which makes everyone children again!!??? I hope that is not it!! Anyway it is a GREAT movie and much better than the others and I would recommend people seeing it especially if you are MI fans and want to see some very striking similarities.

Posted by David Thomsen from the present on May 29, 2011 twenty five past four am

Eh. It was kind of disappointing. The love story between Philip and Syrena was boring and confusing and even more annoying than anything Will and Elizabeth did. The film didn't have Pintel and Ragetti, just some guy called Scrum who couldn't pull off the same comic partnership thing because there was only one of him. Blackbeard and Barbossa were pretty much played straight, unfortunately. It's true that we only really go to see the film because of Johnny Depp anyway, but it helps to have some good secondary characters as well.

As for the similarities between POTC 4 and MI... about as extensive as the similarities between Mario Bros. and any major film about plumbing.

Posted by David Affleck on May 30, 2011 ten to two pm

The cult of sequels bugs me quite a bit. So many people just keep repeating "make MI3! MI3!" The postmoderny and surreal ending of MI2 is my favourite ending of any game, and to me it will always be the last word. New ideas are better than endless sequels.

LeChuck's endless return as the baddie is not my cup of grog. Then we have the "special edition" re-make of the originals, where Steve Purcell's evocative, impressionistic artwork is plastered over with a drab non-style. Enough with all the sequels and "re-makes". Long live originality.

Posted by David Thomsen from the present on May 30, 2011 ten to midnight

I too love the ending to MI2, but I think Ron has a specific story in mind for MI3 that completes the story, it's not just a sequel-for-the-sake-of-sequel. That's what everyone wants - to find out how the story ends, and what the real secret of Monkey Island is.

To be honest, it doesn't matter to me anyway - even if MI3 is commissioned and Ron Gilbert designs it, it's never going to be in the style of the original games anyway. It's going to be all 3D and voice-acted and stuff, and that kind of detracts from the humour of the game for me. My favourite film is The General, which I think really benefits from being silent and monochrome.

There's a reason retro games will always be popular, and it isn't just nostalgia.

Posted by FxLey on May 30, 2011 ten to six pm

Ron, you'll be at E3 next week?

Posted by Gabriel on May 31, 2011 five to six pm

Hi Mr. Gilbert, il'l make the long story short, mostly because my english sucks: just came from work, smoked some stuff, and remembered how much i loved MI1 and MI2, also the futile search i did to find out the infamous secret.

I would really appreciate if you just email me with the answer to the question "Which is the secret of Monkey Island?", i promise i won't reveal it to anyone.

Thanks a lot, if you're in Argentina you can come to my place and drink some "mates" with "facturas", you won't regret it.
