No SCUMMVM for you!

Jan 12, 2007 five to noon

Steve Jobs has announced that the new iPhone will not allow 3rd Party applications in what this author can only assume is an outright attack on Monkey Island.   I'm sure within the halls of Apple and littered in confidential internal memos this was referred to as the "mProblem".  It's a shame that the rest of the software industry has to suffer just because they didn't want Monkey Island on the iPhone.

Let time pass, and someone, somehow will make it possible... Right now, a lill japanese boy is surely resolving this problem...

Lestat.

Boy in Japan??

Try a 15 year old in Wisconsin who already cracked the iPhone via specs he found in a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.

My brain's still gigling but I'm pretty sure someone will port Scummvm for iPhone. Apple's no 3rd party policy is just wishful thinking like Sony's attempt to keep home brew software away from PSP.

(laughs a lot)

And I agree, someone'll probably port SCUMM VM to the iPhone. Mmm Day of the Tentacle would look delicious on that thing, too.

Posted by Feenwager on Jan 12, 2007 quarter to one pm

Who are we kidding? If it lights up and has some storage, somewhere, someone is porting games to it. No bout adout it.

Posted by Juan Diego on Jan 12, 2007 one pm

Maybe, if Safari has Flash...

Posted by MC Kingsley on Jan 12, 2007 twenty to two pm

A Flash-powered ScummVm?! Man... Whoa... Hmm...

Posted by SMNMX on Jan 12, 2007 twenty past seven pm

Besides, the closed software thing is based on the iPod concept.  Since the iPod has games, I assume the iPhone will have Apple-supported games soon enough.  That means that it's possible, anyway, and even if a legally supported ScummVM isn't made, it'll be ported somehow.

What we really need is an open source ultimate portable digital Deus Ex Machina (or whatever the iPhone is supposed to be) that we can download and compile ourselves to whatever configuration we want.

Posted by Ender on Jan 13, 2007 half past three am

Who knows... People were already asking us for a port, before this announcement, and even before the hardware is out and people figure out what it can (be made to...) do.

Sometime, somehow, somewhere... some crazy guy tried to rewrite ScummVM to Java once. Crazy. (At least thats what we called him :)

You guys are freaking geniuses.

Do it illegally and then pretend you didn't. :P

Then again nobody cares for 'em bloody phones, right? Right?

Posted by arensb on Jan 13, 2007 twenty to eight am

I was going to ask who ever heard of a PDA where you couldn't install third-party software, but a closer look at Apple's page shows that they don't actually call it a PDA. They just suggest it all over the place.

the iPhone doesn't support flash right now

Posted by Alex on Jan 13, 2007 five past nine am

Hey, you got featured in the magazine supllement that comes with The Guardian newspaper today.
They didn't mention your awesome legacy of awesome game designs of awesome, though. Only your expert analysis of Monkey Terrorism.

You have a scan?

Posted by playclever on Jan 13, 2007 twenty five past two pm

No scanner, but I took a photo of my copy.  It's p31 of the "Guide" section and essentially just gives your web addy - but still good, right? :)

No 3rd party! What's so great about it then? 1998 when the fashion was mobiles I told my friends, I will not buy new phone until it can play Monkey Island. and believe it or not, I still haven't. I got 3 mobiles for free, but I never bought one for me. I am still waiting now :)

Posted by GotLag on Jan 15, 2007 twenty five past eight am

The only one I've actually seen it run on was the ancient Sony Ericcson p800 phone which has long been extinct. Should see if I can try to dig one up somewhere.

Ron Gilbert, you are a genius, sir. It is a bit of a non sequitur in regards to the matter at hand but is true nonetheless.

Posted by jason on Jan 15, 2007 five past eight pm

Off topic again, but how are you going securing that publiching deal, made any progress??

Posted by Kroms on Jan 19, 2007 quarter past eight am

Private investors. (that's a link).

To keep the blog going, let's not be very offtopic. Please?

Against iPhone closure policy: http://iphone-petition.blogspot.com/
Won't buy an iPhone if I can't run Monkey Island on it! :))

Posted by Harishankar on Apr 4, 2007 ten past ten pm

So, is it only big people like EA will develop games for iPhones, like in ipod. Or there is no games at all?

Mobile Game Porting

Posted by Freax on Apr 7, 2007 twenty five to midnight

Look if u guys really want a portable capable of legally running SCUMMVM, I strongly suggest you consider getting a Chumby. The Chumby is like an Ipod but open source. It runs linux, plays ogg, mp3, has wifi functions and most importantly is open source so hacking it is encouraged. I dont know much about hardware specs but at least its better then convincing Steve Jobs to allow independent development on his propietry hardware.

Posted by Harishankar on Apr 20, 2007 five past five am

Ah Thanks,

Posted by DIguana on Apr 20, 2007 quarter past three pm

The Chumby doesn't look like it's supposed to go up against the iPod or the iPhone at all. It's something you'd put on your shelf, not in your pocket. It's small enough that it would be fairly easy to move from place to place, but I wouldn't call it "portable" in the sense that an MP3 player or PDA is.

Posted by Freax on Apr 26, 2007 ten to eleven pm

Well as I said before I dont know too much about the Chumbys hardware specs. All i really know about the hardware is mentioned above and the fact that the OS uses a Linux kernal. Still sounds kool because ogg files are higher quality than mp3 and are not mainstream yet.

Posted by Dr Gilbert on May 9, 2007 twenty to seven am

Ron, this just isn't healthy. From what I understand Monkey Island was designed for the IBM X86 PC, remember? You didn't have the iPhone in mind when making it (nor did the rest of the crew)! The biggest problem I find with running Monkey Island on the iPhone is carrying around the copy-protection wheel: http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/8964/ipodwf1.jpg
