Big DeathSpank Media Tour Update!
Sorry for this update being late, I've been busy prepping for my possible Supreme Court nomination by re-watching The Wire and then just this morning I wake up and hear that Obama has nominated some "lawyer" to fill the opening. When will this kind of preferential treatment end? It's the legal elite trying to keep the common man from the highest court in the land. What are they so afraid of? DeathSpank maybe?
Oh, speaking of DeathSpank, here is a round-up of the mega press tour I did a couple of weeks ago:
And because I occasionally get asked this question, a fine young gentleman named Sean Howard did a chunk of the writing on DeathSpank. When it was first announced that I was making DeathSpank, he sent me emails for months asking if he could write dialog for it, then mostly to get him to stop bugging me, I sent him a writing test and...well...it was damn funny! Not Supreme Court funny, mind you, but funny!

It's not fair.
Those XBox gamers that don't even hear about a guy called Guybrush will play this master piece of Gilbert and I... I!!! (repeat: I) will not.
So... keep your previews along with the secret of Monkey Island (elegantly said)

I'm trying to figure out how to find time to keep updated on news about games and I wonder if there was an efficient list of sites.
Now I found the distinction I needed. Who did spoke about DeathSpank, they're my choice.
Thanks again Ron ;-)

I have a dream that one day the gamer community will rise up and live out the true meaning of the gaming: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and all shall be able to play any game in the console that they can reach. If it shall be an XBOX, so be it... If it shall be a PS3, so be it... AND IF IT SHALL BE A PC, THEN LET THIS POOR PEOPLE ENJOY IT IN A PC!
We are capable or creating a world where people live among equality and any game is reachable by any person.
Uhm, I think I overreacted a little bit...

Buy DeathSpank for Xbox360 and enjoy it!
And if you do not have an Xbox360, go out and take one!
Do you realize that we are talking about a RON GILBERT game!!!!
After so many years!!!!
It will be THE EVENT of 2010!
DeathSpank will be a system seller!

It really does.
I won't blame you, Ron. We all know very well who is responsible for this. This isn't the first time that those damn publishers gives us the finger.
I'm really happy that you could release your game in a market that gives the instaban to new ideas and doesn't give a damn about a creator's trajectory or prestige.
I can only imagine what you had to go thru to finally see your game published, but it still breaks my heart.
Just like I did a couple of months ago with Brutal Legend, from now on I'll refuse to read or watch anything about Deathspank.
I'm not angry with you, Ron. I know you tried.
Cesar, the Argentinean.

Guys, we're talking about Ron Gilbert, the man who created timeless masterpieces the likes of Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Total Annihilation!
It 's his first game in years and people are complaining ...
I own an Xbox, but I tell you that if I had not, I immediately went to buy it just to play DeatSpank!

Anyway, if it stays console exclusive, somewhere down the road it will probably be possible with a pc emulation, though it certainly will take a while to get there.

@ "That dude used to play pong":
The video game industry is just like many others industries: like the PC manufacturers, food manufacturers, wine manufacturers etc. ...
You love the indie scene? But I am sure that you also enjoy Crysis on your PC...isn't you? Mmmm I really hope that you are not one of those that preferred the golden age of piracy when everyone could play everyting for free...
@"Rexilafa":
I really believe that everyone that can afford an internet connection today is in the position to even buy an already owned Xbox360 (or PS3).
@ "F. Konkas "
... mounted by Bill .... Sorry but.. Wake up! Where are in the 2010 ... War in Vietnam has ended long ago... Again video games are simply one of many ENTERTAINMENT forms ...!
According to your way of thinking then every time a person buys something is mounted by someone!
So when you will buy DeatSpank you will be mounted by ROooooooooN GILBERT! Come on!
For sure your final sentence about "emulation" speak for yourself...
Come on again! live easily and enjoy the life!...and BUY (repeat B-U-Y...) DEATHSPANK!
Posted by F.Konkas on May 18, 2010 quarter to two pm
Anyway, the cruisal difference between the two is that I want to buy Deathspank to play it and give my support for the things Ron brings to the gaming scene. However I do not want to buy a console and support what microsoft and sony bring to the gaming scene which is mostly shite.
As of "ethics, morality, politics".. it's just about this simple fact: because of the tremendous income consoles generates, game publishers want/must (depending who you ask I guess) publish games suited for that particular market (target group, gameplay optimized for gamepads, etc.). Which usually means games with just lots and lots of action and even more action. So if I buy a console I suddenly support the very thing I don't like and there in lies the difference.
About emulation I guess you mean piracy? Emulation need not, and should not, entail any piracy at all. Make an image of a game you own and an emulator makes it possible to play it on a system which the game wasn't designed for. Heck even if you wouldn't need the actual physical game discs you can still just go and buy it anyway. Of course the console company doesn't get anything if you choose to not buy the console, which is the point in this discussion.
Btw don't reduce games to mere simple entertainment (as in killing time). Good games can be so much more!
Posted by Jo-and-go on May 22, 2010 five to four am
I just do not think that Microsoft & Sony are doing shit.
They are far from perfection but I really do not think they do shit. Microsoft x example has done an incredible job with the Xbox.
Obviously if you use to play only mmorpg or strategic game...
Consider that this hardware generation I have (for the first time) fully embraced the console gaming and, let me say, I will never go back to PC one (well actually I bought ToMI x PC but I quit playing it soon after.. I find the controls atrocious especially after have played with Sam&Max for the Xbox).
I just realized & find that console gaming are far superior for a “normal user”: fast, easy, accessible, just sit down on the sofa and play.
And I can assure you that the time of nes & megadrive are over. The game genere offering over the console is huge.
But more important for is that I am getting old you know I do not want to waste my time with setting, upgrades, drivers, compatibility, mouse, resolution etc… I just want sit on my sofa and enjoy a good game, good graphics and have a good time.
And I have also find that the controllers are such a superior experience! You should try a FPS (like Halo) with the controller… you will hate the combo mouse&keyb I can assure you!
And any way, when I said that vgame are entertainment I really do not intend to demystify their value.
You have to know that Art is entertainment, Music is entertainment, as a tennis match or an 30 mins of jogging are entertainment: they all fight to win over your leisure times.
Oh, and by the way, all the above list exist for money (also “Art”, I can assure you!!! I have so extensively work in this sector…)…
But the point is: you do not want to buy DeatSpank (for whatever is your reason)?
It is your problem, I just sorry for Ron, but I undoubtedly will be there day1. I can assure you.
Posted by pananag on May 19, 2010 twenty to six am
Why am I forced to buy a console?
Posted by Rusty Broomhandle on May 19, 2010 twenty five to eight am
And I refuse to give any money to Microsoft.
Posted by Someone on May 22, 2010 ten to five am
Your sentence about the multi-activities that a PC allow you to do, has suddenly remembered me when I was young and I try desperately to persuade my parent to buy me the first 286 because with it I would have been able do my home work, to do research etc… So funny!
But you are right! None can force you to buy a console!
But in my part of world I use to pay to have something, if it is not free.
I want to see VHSs you have to buy the reader. You want to see a 3d movie you have to pay a cinema thicket or buy a 3dTV etc…
When, x example, the final special super limited star wars collector edition will be released on Bluray… You will have to buy a Bluray reader (and give your money to sony…).
So, you want to play DeathSpank you have to own a console, this time around.
That it.
@ “Rusty Broomhandle”
I know that you “PC people” hate consoles, hate Bill Gates, hate Microsoft and all the other things typical of your consumer cluster/niche. But why you do not hate Intel or Amd or the graphic card producers (that, by the way, used to release new hardware every 1-3 month)?
We can discuss the issue of PC "limited numbers of installation" for years... the point is that this is a (bad) solution for a huge and unsolved problem..
And believe me unethical things happend in Africa not about a PC game...
Again I will enjoy Ron Gilbert’ DEATHSPANK while you all will fight against the system!
Let me know if you win, eh!
Posted by pananag on May 22, 2010 ten am
As far as it concerns the quality of the games in consoles , they are probably superior to these of the PCs. But I don't care.
All these years I expected a new game from Ron Gilbert, because I admire him a lot and he used to be (and continues to be) an idol for me for his humour , his intelligence and his wit.
I'm sorry Ron, I like you but I won't spend 200 Euros for your game.
All in all, I will feel disappointed if eventually there is no version for PCs.

I know, nobody talk about the PC Versions.. but just trust "Hothead Games", they announced on 2010-04-28...
"We’ve read all the polite requests (and the not so polite ones) to bring DeathSpank to PC platforms. Rest assured that both EA and Hothead want as many people as possible to experience DeathSpank, so don’t read too much into the announced platforms just yet. Get yourself subscribed to the RSS feed for this blog (links below) or follow us on Twitter and we’ll update you as soon as any new platforms get confirmed."

His comic was good too. No. It was great. Too bad about his personal problems. And I thought A Modest Destiny was a really great piece of work. Really. He can be really funny. He has a very light touch with his dialogue. Complete tool though.
It would be nice if there is some sort of inversely proportionate ratio to Geek artists' level of capability and their interpersonal skills. Then y'all would be filthy rich.
