Ubisoft to dump StarFarce?

Apr 13, 2006 quarter past ten am

The giant unblinking eye of the Internet has reported that Ubisoft is dumping StarFarce on a few upcoming titles, and has no plans to use it going forward.

I can only hope this is true.  Maybe this and the Sony DRM fiasco will finally convince companies that while they do have a right to protect their game/music/movie, they can not do it at the expense of my machine, something they do not own.

I also hope that Ubisoft will re-release some past titles like Brothers in Arms: Bla Bla Bla sans StarFarce so I can finally buy them.

While I can not take full credit for the Ubisoft dropping StarFarce, I am sure that my unwillingness to buy up to 6 titles was well talked about in the boardrooms at Ubicentral.

A little glance of light at the horizon.
But you really have to be dumb and blind not to recognize that Starfarce is just one, two or one dozen steps too much...
I mean, also developers, like Ascaron with DarkStar One, prohibited Ubi to use it with their games.
Hopefully one of the last things to hear from Starfarce. I'd just like to see it buried by Stan.

Thank freakin god. Ubisoft have come up with some pretty decent games, Starfarce has been a big dissapointment for me.

That said, on the Grumpy Gamer side of things, I tend to be more Grumpy than a gamer, and I prolly still won't buy such titles if they were re-released sans SF cuz they weren't the games for me.

The game cube modchip and it's respective "copied" games are another a GOOD example of the abilities that pirates have.

How can you tell wich ones have SF?

In my day we had easily reproduced copy wheels, and companies were happy with it by-gum.

Also, does anyone remember which book inspired Monkey Island? I've been looking for a decent pirate story, and I can't remember.

Posted by Joshi on Apr 15, 2006 half past noon

I'm sure Ron would tell you he was actually inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World and I'm pretty sure it never had any story to it (although I could be wrong). If other books helped inspire the game I don't know about them, but Ron might (well, there's a slim chance he'll know).

If you're looking for a some decent pirate stories, Treasure Island isn't bad.

I thought I remembered this. An old GG post where Ron talks about the book  that helped to inspire MI: http://grumpygamer.com/6476640

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a bundle. I didn't want to try to dig through the old posts, becuase I couldn't remember how old it was.

A search for "inspiration" finds the article.

Search is under the main title.

Well there ya go. It's a good thing I don't pretend to know everything, else I'd have looked like a right fool.

DRM should really be called CRAP according to zdnet:

Turns out the reason Oblivion has gone from "crashes quite a lot, doesn't it?" to "completely unplayable rot" on my PC is because of StarForce. I'm not happy. Who do I write to to complain?

Posted by aristides castiglioni on Apr 18, 2006 twenty to nine am

well, tha's great!!! who needs to buy games that put crap in your machine???? starforce is the wrong way to go as is vista, it appears that everybody is talking about vista but few mention that it's going to be the rencarnation of DRM, i just hope that everybody drops it just as we did with  starforce games, vista is not only a huge waste of resources just to make your interface look pretty but at the cost of buying high cards and lots of mem and processor power that is going to be used for a "nice" window. but most important that piece of crap is going to be a huge DRM patch for our computers, so i hope everybody sends it to hell with starforce.

I have that copyright protection face wheel :] totally worth the $2 at the goodwill store!

The only way to find out if a game is StarFarce "protected" is to check a 3rd party  list, like the one found here:

http://www.glop.org/starforce/

I have Silent Storm sitting on my shelf, uninstalled, because I found out too late that it has StarFarce protection.

Posted by Mehrunes on Apr 20, 2006 twenty past two pm

Silent Storm versions other than the Russian one don't have Starforce. Makes you wonder how much of the info on Anti-Starforce sites is just plain false.

Posted by Jim on Aug 6, 2006 quarter past midnight

That is completely false. I bought it off amazon and it installed starforce on my machine.

Now the disease spreads to Heavy Metal Labels. Recently bought a CD (Theatre of Tragedy:Storm (note to myself: just because they did great music in the past does not mean they do it nowadays) ) and was a little shocked when I read the print on the CD: "This CD my set free a Virus if you play it on your computer."

OK, besides from being shocked how bad the band had become this was another good reason for bringing the CD back to the store. And I had hoped with Sony and Co being bashed for it others would retsrain from such stupidity.

Your unwillingness to buy 6 titles was a topic to be discussed about at boardrooms at Ubicentral. Unisoft will re-release some past titles but its upto you how many you want to buy.
