Another World

Apr 16, 2006 quarter past eight am

Eric Chahi has released a high-res version of the his incredible and ground breaking game: Another World.  I met Eric at the Paris IGDA meeting last month.  I sat across from him at dinner and didn't realize who he was until the end of the evening.  It was a real honor to meet him.  Out of this World was one of those games that really pushed me forward.

Edge Magazine has an interview with Eric that can be found here.

Another World was one of those games which shone out like a beacon of hope surrounded by a sea of mediocrity (LucasArts adventures excluded of course).

Wow, It's an incredible game, great coding with great graphic.... This title rocks on Amiga..... and also on PC (in '90 the pc was a shame for platforms)

Posted by Ogni on Apr 16, 2006 five pm

I already downloaded it and ordered the key for the full version. Unfortunately it hasn't been emailed to me yet (it's been 2 days now). Can't wait to play it further! Loved the Amiga version, but never made it through... I hope I will do better this time!

You have to click the 'back to the shop' button when the transaction is finished. That will trigger the sending of the key.

Posted by Ogni on Apr 19, 2006 ten to nine am

I read that (it was printed in red), and did so, well maybe I did something wrong...

Posted by Richard Jones on Apr 23, 2006 five past four pm

I'm also waiting for my key. I've sent them an email too, and haven't received a response after a couple of days. I'm a little bummed-out that I'm most likely going to have to go find a hax to play it :(

Posted by Eric on Apr 30, 2006 twenty five past five am

Did you finally got your key ? if not contact me there:

Thank you very much !

awesome that u met Eric thats such a cooincidence!

Posted by gnome on Apr 17, 2006 ten to four am

Hah! I played it on an Amiga 1200... Oh, and any news on an English version?

Cheers

Posted by David Thomsen on Apr 17, 2006 ten to ten pm

More importantly, are there any plans for a Mac version???

I never played this game on my A500, but I did play everything else.

I always liked the general idea of Another World, but the entire trial-an-error approach, combined with the fact that you had to re-do around six to seven screens until you returned to the place where you died (for another round of trial-and-error) really bugged me.

I think I'm more of a Flashback type of gamer.

Posted by Incognito_Swe on Apr 17, 2006 ten to five am

The trial and error-aspect of this game bugged me to, because of the loadingtimes in the Amiga-version. But I will definitely buy this now since the loadingtimes now are non-existent in this new version.

I always liked this type of "less is more"-games. :)

This raises the question whether or not Chahi had already foreseen an update would one day be a possibility? After all, the vector graphics made this an accomplishable feat.

Posted by Hanuman on Apr 17, 2006 ten to four pm

Ron,off topic, but what do you think of Oblivion?
I recently gave it a chance and am quite impressed

Posted by GoT on Apr 17, 2006 twenty past five pm

OGNI
have u got your CD key yet? i want to buy this too but i'll wait to hear what u have to say first!

Posted by Ogni on Apr 19, 2006 five to nine am

It seems like I did something wrong, noone else does have problems!

Posted by David Thomsen on Apr 17, 2006 half past eleven pm

I just read the WikiPedia article on Another World, Eric made the game all by himself. That's why I think of the late 80s/early 90s as the golden age of computer games - people actually could make computer games all by themselves, it was within their power. These days it would take several thousand lifetimes for one person to make a single computer game.

I used to plan to make games like that. It was my childhood dream. Then when I grew up it was too late.

I envy the people who were born early enough to pioneer computer games and have their name etched in history forever. What's left for people to pioneer these days? Mobile ringtones?

Posted by Giles on Apr 18, 2006 one am

Things never go away, they just change their skin. Single person/handfuls of people game development moved from the commercial mainstream to the mod community, in part at least. Consider the standard examples from FPS games - TeamFortress, Counter-Strike, Garrys Mod and countless single player missions were all the work of three or fewer people.

Posted by originalteadrinker on Apr 18, 2006 twenty past two am

Indeed modding is a great way to make something good with a small team. Unfortunately with the increasing complexity of engines and the visual demands this is going to become harder and harder. The real opportunities for small developers lie in the casual and independent gaming markets. That's where innovation is going to come from in the future.

Posted by Giles on Apr 21, 2006 quarter to five pm

The problem with the modding community isn't that the visual demands have gone up, it's that the guys making the mods think they've gone up. 80% of the guys making mods today have lost sight of the ball: they've forgotten that their audience understands that they can't compete on visual fidelity with professionals working for several years and they've forgotten that the point of mods is to explore areas of game design that commercial games are too conservative to venture in to. If anything, the tools are better than they ever were, so the opportunities are there as much as they ever were - just fewer people are taking them.

"These days it would take several thousand lifetimes for one person to make a single computer game."

Nope. It's quite possible. Clicky my name to go to my site -- I wrote my own game. And it's pretty good, to boot. Ron quite liked it, at least, which is enough for me...!

Posted by space ace on Apr 18, 2006 three am

another world shows what animation is all about. today's games have tons of animation but it's not exciting or integrated in the experience in an organic way...

so, what did eric say?! :)

Posted by AdamW on Apr 19, 2006 twenty past three pm

Tried Alien Hominid?

Posted by space ace on May 1, 2006 ten to ten am

no, i missed that :/

Posted by Mewtation on Apr 18, 2006 half past seven pm

So is it possible to purchase the full version with American dollars?

Posted by Enno on Apr 18, 2006 quarter past eleven pm

Yay! My favourite game is back.

I purchased it yesterday, and, having done so at least five times before, managed to finish it in under two hours. Still, best money I've spent all year.

Posted by Sithlord on Apr 20, 2006 quarter past three am

Ah I played this on my Amiga 600 ... I love games with a unique atmosphere (like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus)... and the new backgrounds look great!

Posted by Some fat elvis lookalike on Apr 20, 2006 quarter past seven am

I think this, and animal crossing DS, will be the best things that i've spent my money on all year

Posted by Sven on Apr 21, 2006 twenty past seven am

I played this game as a kid. The opening scene must have been the scariest thing I ever experienced in a game at that time.

Posted by Busca on Apr 21, 2006 twenty past one pm

Oh my God! Ron Gilbert exists!
I thougth he was some science-fiction creation. You are my idol. You and Natalie Imbruglia makes sense in my life (for different reasons, obviously).
Well. Thank you.
I try to make something genial as your games but the only thing i've made is this stupid site: http://digilander.libero.it/buscameets
What do you think of it?

P.S.
In Italy we don't exactly eat what Mario shows in Tv...

He couldve at least TRIED to make the 3D models a bit more erm "up to date".

I know it's in high res, but he still looks like a block man!

Actually, the low-res character actually looks BETTER!

Another World was the first color PC game I've seen. I'd been playing games on our 286 grayscale LCD portable (yes, we had an 286 portable), but while visiting my techie uncle, I caught a few minutes of Another World gameplay. I was but 8 years old, perhaps?

That night, I couldn't sleep. Because of the leeches.

I never got past the first level, and never intend to. However, I want to finish Flashback. I watched my big bro finish it, and I'm forever hooked to that game.

Posted by Stewart Martin on Apr 25, 2006 twenty past ten pm

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but the thing that gets me about another world is the dying.  I mean, you have to either have hand eye coordination, and reflexes like a ninja or you have to like, or at least not mind dying repeatedly.

One of the reasons I play adventure games, sometimes, is so I don't have to die repeatedly.  It's not one of my favorite things. For the sake of redundancy, dying repeatedly is not one of my favorite things.

The visual elements are nice though. They remind me of 2d-design class.

Posted by Kroms on Apr 25, 2006 quarter to eleven pm

Ron, all grown-up?!

OMG.

Posted by paxed on Apr 30, 2006 twenty five past seven am

IIRC, someone reverse-engineered the original Another World game engine, and it was mostly working (and running on Linux too!), when Eric asked it to be removed, because he'd do this...
So, now i'm just miffed I can't run this new AW on a Linux. Grrh. :(

Posted by Holleak on May 1, 2006 five am

Once I've played Another World on a Mega Drive platform.
But there's nothing comparable to the cool clacking- sound of the keyboard's space- bar, playing on PC (although it's much harder to control at all).
Isn't Prince of Persia the direct graphic- sequel of Another World? Ah, and I remember Blizzard's Black Thorne. Some days later, for sure. But game controlling's very similar.
Whatever...

The original Prince of Persia came before Another World. AW uses a similar rotoscoping technique, which is why people tend to compare the two games.

Its an incredible game with great graphics. I have already downloaded it but waiting for full version to come up. Can't wait anymore, want to play it right now. I just love playing games-any kind.

The visual elements r nice enough to hold u there. Its an adventurous game, thats why it is on top of my list. I love playing adventurous games-u die so many times and got to fight against the enemies. Not in real life but still somewhere. Waiting eagerly for the full version!

I used to play it lond time back and its exciting to know that its back again. Game with great graphics. Waiting for the full version so that i can revive my memory. Lets wait!

Posted by BenPaddon.co.uk on May 15, 2006 ten to eight am

After downloading, buying and completing Another World, I felt compelled to track down a copy of Heart of the Alien (AW II). I finally have it, but it's nowhere near as good as AW and the animation somehow doesn't quite seem so slick. AW II just seems to be out to kill you. AW, at least, gave you hints about what you had to do.

Flashback, however, is genius. I recently discovered REmenisence, a Flashback engine for Windows that uses/requires the original PC files and the original Amiga musical score. Fantastic.

I love playing games of any type. Would like to play this one also. The graphics of this game r eye-catchy so worth waiting for the full version.

"Another world" is a wonderful version. Colors, animation, graphics, sound, everything is just perfect. Its really fun playing nintendo's games.

Posted by Larry on Jun 18, 2006 twenty past eleven pm

The presentation and visual elements are attractive to make you stick to the game. Its an adventure in itself. The new version is superb.

Posted by old kid on Jun 19, 2006 quarter to four pm

Incredible, to be able to see this game revived. I played this game back in 93 on my Amiga500. That black monster chasing you, the intro sound of alien breed 2 and shadow of the beast were the scariest things found in computer games back in those days. Some parts of this game are just freaking hard to complete. But still this is one of my favourite classic games.
