April Fools' Day #4

Mar 31, 2008 twenty five to seven pm

Four glorious years in a row, the Grumpy Gamer family of websites has remained 100% April Fools' Day joke free.

Remember, every time a April Fools' joke is played, a point-n-click adventure game concept is killed.

I second that!

Posted by Maratanos on Mar 31, 2008 quarter past seven pm

Yeah, nice how you avoid April fools jokes by simply moving them to other days, like Pi day.

An April Fools joke need not be subtle.  All it is is an intenthional untruth on a particular date for one's own amusement.  Change the date to Pi day and it's still got the same pros and cons.

Get with the program.

So that's what happened to adventure games.

Posted by Kroms on Mar 31, 2008 quarter past nine pm

You make a man proud, Ron. We should turn this day into Ron Gilbert Day and all dress-up as monkeys.

This site should be nominated for the Nobels peace price! ok, I'll do it! I mean, noone rarely argue on this "forum" and I haven't seen one genuine Troll either! Everyone agree and worship the story about a none-lethal pirate, a rubber chicken and a few monkeys... Yeah!

Oh, I used my bike to get to work today, a first this year.

On topic:
Finaly, a sancuary where I can relax, not being fooled today!

that's nice to hear... some one just stole our coffee machine...!!1 :(

Posted by Abelo on Apr 1, 2008 ten to two am

But there are cool April's Fools jokes! Blizzard's are anthological.

You are so grumpy Ron, we still love you though :D

Posted by Johnny W on Apr 1, 2008 twenty five past five am

I'm not falling for it, I know there's a joke around here somewhere. You won't make me look like a fool!

How boring yaaaawn

Vart ligger badrummet?

Posted by Ogni on Apr 1, 2008 ten to six am

So are you the Ron Gilbert who is supposedly starting to contribute to Mixnmojo now, or is that an imposter trying to fool us on April 1st?

Posted by Ronzo on Apr 1, 2008 twenty five to seven am

No, that's really me! It's the person who's currently posting stuff on Grumpy Gamer who's the imposter! I knew I shouldn't have betted away my admin details in last week's poker game with Dave Grossman... :~

So am I considered in the family? The site linked in my name there is also 100% Joke Free.

Posted by Dante Kleinberg on Apr 1, 2008 ten past eight am

Congratulations!  This is quite an accomplishment, Mr. Gilbert.

I picture one of those signs they have at work places to show how many days they've been without accidents.

It has been
0 4
years since our last April Fool's Day Joke

"Remember, every time a April Fools' joke is played, a point-n-click adventure game concept is killed."

I did wonder why the genre was dead. >:)

Posted by Pandan on Apr 1, 2008 half past nine am

If what you say is true, I will never make an April Fools' joke again.

We must save those poor adventure games!

Posted by Abelo on Apr 1, 2008 ten am

Ha! Every time Ron begins development on an action-RPG, God cancels a point'n'click adventure.

Posted by Alex on Apr 1, 2008 ten past ten am

Godamned! Now im feeling really bad... I love April Fools... but for the point'n'click adventures I will no celebrate this day! I swear it!

SAY NO TO THE P'N'C KILLER!

Posted by León on Apr 1, 2008 five to noon

I got a question... which is the real story about the monkey head?, how is that it arrived to monkey island? is it related to the secret?.

Posted by León on Apr 1, 2008 five to noon

I correct myself... 3 questions :)

Thanks, Mr. Gilbert, I've updated my list:

Jane Jensen and Roberta Williams killed adventure games by:
1) getting funding for game scripts that weren't worth the paper they were printed on (if scripts for those trainwrecks existed in the first place)
2) by putting out awful stuff which broke Mr Gilbert's awesome rules of engagement time and time again
3) by setting the "standard" for adventure game to be "awful" (see 1 and 2)
4) by making an average of 7.5 April Fool's Jokes every year. (@#$&!)

Posted by HooLandorMofogamaWIzYkwhatomophis on Apr 1, 2008 half past two pm

It is not the april fools jokes that kill point n' click games, but the bad ones...
You Mr Gilbert, as a the designer of funy games that you are, should know that.

Posted by LipraLipra Consulting on Apr 1, 2008 twenty five to four pm

Oh whyyyyyyyy. Usually I hate that Day too, but this time there were some good pranks played, specially in the mainstream media (apart from them saying: April's fool, we're not actually liberal, we're republican).

Posted by kraps on Apr 1, 2008 ten to four pm

oh gee, the day when the remaining 0,000015% of non-foolish population are being incorporated with the glorious rest. who would notice anyway. <grump grump>

Posted by some fat elvis lookalike on Apr 1, 2008 twenty five past four pm

I've actually started to hate April Fools now, because it's just a waste of time.

Examples:
- Fucking Kotaku and their fucking cakes

What r the origins of april fools day?

Cause in south america and spain we celebrate the same stupid thing but the 28 of december.  It is  call "dia de los inocentes" (innocents day) and it is realated  to the massive extermination of babies that king Herodes order trying to kill jesus.
In our case it makes sense you know......a king kills  thousands of babies and 2000 years later we celebrate, make jokes and pranks.
But yours april fools???
Gees, you r weird people.

Posted by Captain Beaver on Apr 2, 2008 ten to three am

I always thought it was a pagan festival....

Posted by Someone on Apr 2, 2008 ten to two pm

In south america? Speak for your self, couse in Brazil the Fools day is April 1st too!

Posted by 7u15mk on Apr 2, 2008 twenty past three pm

its not 28th, its january 6th

Posted by Lenar Hoyt on Apr 3, 2008 quarter past eleven am

No, you're wrong, it's indeed December 28th. See for yourself in Wikipedia. January 6th is the Epiphany of Christ or "Dia de Reyes" (Three Wise Men Day).

Posted by Someone on Apr 3, 2008 half past one pm

Now that goes for Brazil too

Posted by tinydino on Apr 2, 2008 twenty five to four am

Posted by Ives Castagnino on Apr 2, 2008 five to five pm

It's more like a sect by now.

Posted by Guy on Apr 3, 2008 quarter to one am
