12 Adventures in 24 Hours

Nov 14, 2005 five to ten am

OK, I'm going to break my (temporary) self-imposed exile from blogging to post a link to Hendrik Vogelpohl's video of himself playing 12 adventure games in 24 hours because it's just too damn funny, or maybe funny isn't the word I'm looking for.

Hi Ron,

glad to hear you again. You`re still alive and I hope you have some surprises for us in the not so far future...

Posted by Vincent Hamm on Nov 14, 2005 quarter to eleven am

Ha! You can see him calling the hint line !

More seriously, this is a little bit pointless, as the guy who finished Morrowind in a bit less than an hour (can't remember the exact time it took him...)

Posted by Rodi on Nov 14, 2005 quarter to noon

I don't think it's pointless. It makes for a nice little movie. Of course the guy's rushing through the games and not sitting back and enjoying them, but it's the challenge that counts. If I recall, finishing Morrowind in an hour means you have to exploit every flaw and crevice in the gameplay, whereas the guy in the video most probably played everything from start to finish.

Of course it would have been easy for him to just tamper with the clock, but I believe in the honesty of this challenge. Otherwise, what's the point?

Posted by Ike on Nov 16, 2005 twenty five to eight am

Yeah, here is a vid of Morrowind in < 8min: < http://www.archive.org/details/Morrowind_730 >

There should be more classic ScummVM games up on SDA and archive.org already.  If there is an audience for RPGs, then there is an audience for adventure games.

Heh, and that 12/24 vid just made my morning.

I re-played through Monkey Island 1 all night on New Years' Eve once. Is that more, or less nerdy than this guy?

Posted by Udvarnoky on Nov 14, 2005 twenty five to two pm

Nope, sorry.  It doesn't count if you don't include Labyrinth, Grim Fandango, and EMI.  Better luck next time!

Posted by Ron Gilbert on Nov 14, 2005 twenty past two pm

I think the point was these were all SCUMM games.  I'm not 100% sure of CMI, but I think it was as well.

Posted by Udvarnoky on Nov 14, 2005 quarter to three pm

Yeah, it was.

Posted by Vincent Hamm on Nov 14, 2005 twenty five past ten pm

Yup, the hackiest scumm version ever.

Posted by jmackley on Nov 15, 2005 ten to ten pm

What a stupid thing to say.

Posted by takushi on Nov 14, 2005 twenty to two pm

all that pc magazines says that you need 40+ hours for monkey island 3....

Posted by Kitna on Nov 14, 2005 five past two pm

Actually there is a movie of morrowind being finished in 9.5 minutes.

Posted by Duncan Stibbard Hawkes on Nov 14, 2005 twenty five past two pm

At new years eve? Yes! Otherwise no.

Posted by Shura on Nov 14, 2005 quarter to four pm

Lovely. :) And the music's really nice, too - does anyone know if it's possible to get those remixes (I assume they are remixes... are they?) somewhere?

Posted by eloj on Nov 15, 2005 twenty past one am

For Zak and MM remixes try http://remix.kwed.org/

The Gone Jackals CD

That video was like my childhood in 2 minutes. Awesome.

This is exactly how time was spent in front of my computer in the early 90's, besides BBS

how quality time spent in front of the computer got wasted by multitask OS

Either your 'big announcement' will include that you are working on sam&max 2/another new old adventure or it will state that you are leaving the industry...

Well, choose wisely young padawan. You dont want to loose your fans, dont you? ;)

And yes, great Video.

Either your 'big announcement' will include

What big announcement?

Posted by PissedOffMonkeyIslandFan on Nov 16, 2005 quarter to eleven am

When your baby is due

Posted by Kirk on Nov 16, 2005 ten past nine am

It's too bad you can't do that with Sierra games. You'd probably get killed and have to start all over.

Posted by Francis on Nov 16, 2005 half past ten am

Or bored to death.

Posted by Anon on Nov 18, 2005 twenty past three pm

Yeah, totally unlike Maniac Mansion or Fate of Atlantis.

Posted by Rob on Nov 16, 2005 twenty five past six pm

Wow Ron, that was pretty sweet. I played through several of those in the past few weeks, but I make savepoints before the major cutscenes and such so I can actually watch them. Amazing how much longer it took when you had to invent a way to win. On the Sierra note, I can only imagine watching KQ4 played with all the horrible one-liner deaths, the accidental cliff falls, etc.

I miss the character of the old games. Everything is so easy and graphically pleasurable today, that we are focused more on graphics and 3D surround than actual adventure/gameplay. Plus, the violence has beaten out the cheesy humor and english lovers puns. It is a sad day. :(

On another note:
I don't need a big announcement. Some of the best years of my life have already been consumed by the brainchildren of Ron Gilbert. If anything, I am thankful and in awe. Ron is like Tinkerbell, and until we all believe in Adventure Games, Ron is forced to live in darkness :(

Posted by m0 on Nov 17, 2005 ten past ten am

Curse of the Tinkerbell Island!

so that's what it really is about....

or maybe "finding neverland" ?

no, no actually I'm positive it's about becoming an adult stuck in a children's body... no... that was Big starring Tom Hanks. Maybe the secret is that deep inside we are all from the planet of the Apes, thus the curse of being a kid stuck inside a monkey, well stuffed monkeys. Seamonkeys anyone?

Posted by Schneider on Nov 18, 2005 twenty past five am

Aw man, he didn't save Sophia?

Posted by nervous_testpilot on Nov 18, 2005 twenty to ten am

I have an interview with Vogel, the guy who made this video, up on my site here if anyone's interested:

Death TO AMERICA!!! Die american scumm!
Allah is great.

Posted by Matt on Dec 15, 2005 quarter past four am

The back of my Monkey Island box promised an average of 30 hours playing time. I want my money back.

Posted by Ben Sones on Feb 19, 2006 five past seven am

He should have thrown Myst in, too, since it's technically possible to finish the game in less than two minutes, start to finish, once you know all the secrets.

Posted by Kroms on Aug 2, 2006 quarter to six am

My life summed-up.
