Dear Windows Vista

Why do I care?

Surely you jest?

I haven't seen this one happen to me, and yes, I use Vista.

Posted by LuigiHann on Nov 29, 2007 twenty five to noon

There are a lot of jacks on the back of the computer, so it's good to have an indication that you hit the right one?

Posted by Whup on Nov 29, 2007 five pm

Or the wrong one.

You just plugged a USB stick into your network port. They're both broken now.

Posted by Txus on Nov 30, 2007 twenty to eleven am

My girlfriend also has one of these "You plugged sth in the incorrect place" pop up things

Posted by Tom on Nov 29, 2007 twenty to noon

Considering that you can never be entirely sure what Vista's audio system is up to, it's not really such a bad thing.

After all Windows has typically always been proud when something actually worked and thus displayed those little bubble messages. It's really quite a jarring experience when you go back and forth between Mac and PC often. You just presume it works on the Mac. On Windows you really kinda do need the confirmation.

Posted by pipomolo42 on Nov 29, 2007 ten to noon

Actually, this message is really helpful. It's here to warn you that your network connection speed has just been decreased by 90%: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/21/1441240

Posted by LipeCau on Nov 29, 2007 five to noon

I wonder what happens when you stream radio...

Posted by Bogomips on Nov 29, 2007 quarter past noon

Your box implodes, creates a black hole and destroys the earth. But I hear they'll fix this with SP1.

Posted by DAGO on Nov 29, 2007 quarter past noon

What? Really? Now I've gotta unplug and plug my audio cables until it's not funny anymore.

Posted by Soren Dreijer on Nov 29, 2007 twenty to one pm

Too bad the balloon isn't coming from Windows Vista itself but rather some third party application you installed. At least the speaker icon is not placed in the "Vista-side" of the tray area, plus the icon looks hideous..

Posted by sw2 on Nov 29, 2007 half past two pm

I think you're right. The icon seems to belong to Realtek Sound Effect Manager that comes with their sound card driver.

Posted by Pendor on Nov 29, 2007 five to one pm

VISTA = Very Ineficcient System

Still don't know what T and D stand for.

I'll figure it out later.

Just one question, Ron:

Why Vista?

Posted by Pendor on Nov 29, 2007 ten past one pm

*T and A

Sorry.

¬_¬

Posted by telnetdoogie on Nov 29, 2007 ten to two pm

heehee! T n' A!!

Posted by Chris Hepner on Nov 29, 2007 five past three pm

Yeah, this is your Realtek sound driver, not Vista. Much to my dismay, I have these drivers, but on XP. (Mine is inanely enthusiastic, stating "You have plugged a device into the audio jack!")

I'm considering buying a new sound card just to get away from the steaming pile these drivers are, but I don't want to give my money to Creative, either.

Posted by Kroms on Nov 29, 2007 twenty to five pm

More importantly: Are you sure you wanna do that? Are you really sure? Super really sure? You're still sure? So sure you you're more sure of it than you're sure of your own name? Okay: Device added.

Posted by blah blah on Nov 29, 2007 ten past five pm

OP is retarded.

Posted by Andrew Herron on Nov 29, 2007 eight pm

As someone said above, this is Realtek's fault.  Their new XP drivers probably do the same thing.  So sick of people blaming Vista for everything :)

This pissed me off so much when I got my new Dell box that I spent 10 minutes working out how to turn it off.  Here's how:
* Open control panel
* Open Realtek HD Audio Manager (at the bottom of hardware & sound if you use the new-style control panel)
* Click the blue "I" in the bottom right (above the OK button)
* Click the blue dot next to "Display Icon in Notification Area" to remove the tray icon, and the popups.  It's not like you needed that icon anyway.

Posted by Gord Allott on Nov 30, 2007 half past four am

i don't think it really matters whos fault it is;
'dear the world; why do we care about you telling us what we already know because we are the one that did it?' my linuxy systems are doing more and more of this kind of thing of late and its bugging me also

Posted by Chalito on Nov 30, 2007 twenty five to seven am

Ditch that silly excuse for an OS and install Ubuntu :)

Posted by netmonkey on Nov 30, 2007 seven am

I stood at a crossroads the other day. My computer was getting old, and I wanted to get something more portable, like a laptop. I looked at Windows Vista and thought, "do I really want this? Do I really want to deal with (basically, Ron's screenshot)?" I looked at linux and told her, "I can't take care of you all day! You're more needy than Windows! You need an operation every time there's an update! And you're a little *Gimp*ed. I'm sorry."

So I got a Macintosh. Sure, I can't play most games, but at least I can play Monkey  Island (lol) on ScummVM (woo!). And it never complains. It only tells me what I want to hear. It's the best personal computer I've ever had.

PS- I still have access to Windows anyway, so I'm not too worried about missing out on games or anything.

Posted by Ike on Nov 30, 2007 quarter past seven pm

Well that pop-up might not be all Vistas fault, but the "You have blocked startup programs" dialog that pops up on boot (and several times an hour if you don't manually interact with it) sure is.  That is absolutely ridiculous.

I wish you were dead Vista, like how you die when I try and put you in hibernate.

Posted by Alon on Nov 30, 2007 half past nine pm

Ha. I don't have vista but my bro wants to get it. Guess this is another strike against him =)

You care because that thing goes off to play silly buggers with your Direct X audio device.

Posted by 7U15MK on Dec 1, 2007 twenty five to eleven am

can we get your google talk ID by any chance?

Posted by Joe on Dec 23, 2007 ten to four am

We can try.

Posted by RDP837 on Dec 1, 2007 quarter past four pm

If it was due to Vista wouldn't you be asked if you were sure you wanted the jack plugged in and then the UAC dialogue box would pop up :-)

IMHO after a few months Vista doesn't seem that bad. Kind of reminds me of the problems I had with XP when I first got it, then 98, and 3.11. I miss RISC OS.

Posted by One of all your fans on Dec 1, 2007 half past nine pm

Why don't you reivindicate your position? You're simply the best. So Vista is only make up with a lot of uncompatibilities.

Posted by Lord Banshie on Dec 2, 2007 half past five am

I may be wrong, but I don't think thats Windows Vista's sound software, I've seen a similar situation with driver software under Windows XP. (I use both OS, and more :P)

Posted by gnome on Dec 2, 2007 half past six am

I'd love to help, but I'm far too busy unplugging Jack. Sorry, good luck....

Posted by Heartless_ on Dec 2, 2007 twenty past seven am

It just amazes me that there is not a simple "basic user mode" to "advanced user mode" switch that can be set in Vista.  I am dreading my boss coming and saying "Switch to Vista.".  The other guy that I work with uses Vista now on his work machine, but I just can't bring myself to do it.  I will be in sramble mode if I get forced into a Vista switch.  But thats what you get in the world of part-time IT work where you have no real say in how things get run.

Posted by Mundinator on Dec 3, 2007 quarter past ten am

OMG Agreed.  First time I saw this all I could think was, "NO SHIT!"  I needed my OS to tell me that.  WTFBBQ?

Posted by Torbjörn Andersson on Dec 5, 2007 midnight

I run Windows XP at work, and some days Outlook (I think) will display a series of cute little balloons which basically say "oops, I lost contact with the Exchange server... no, it's up again... down again... up again". And on those rare occasions when the mail server really goes down for a few hours? Not a single warning. Go figure.

Hey guys,
do you write these comments only for your own pleasure?
I have never seen an answer from Ron here...

Hey Ron, i just heard that you make a phoneinterview with a german television show called Telespiel on GIGA.
I can't wait to hear this.
Please tell us the secret that womi didn't asked for!! :D

Posted by Watermellow_DrOnE on Dec 8, 2007 five past six am

Ron Gilbert... I'm surry but you suck!
I've played Monkey Island and it is a piece of shit!
The gameplay is horrible, the sound effects are detestable and there is no on-line suport!!!!! Have you ever heard of replayability? I can't even play it with 2 players with a split screen... You could at least add some downlodable contentto extend its life...
Not to coment its graphics. It totaly sucks. Gears of Wars have much more realistical graphics! I can't belive you aren't ashamed for delivering such crap for the consumers...
Instaling the game is another piece of shit! I hate switching flopies... the game is so small it could be easily distributed online! Or if you just put it on dvd it could have high definition scenes! Why didn't you use blue-ray?!?! You could ad some 3d enviroments with real time physics and shadowing, and some first person shooting sequences... It should also be more like gta, and the swordfighting should have blood and bad langage...
Seriously I can't see the point of your fucking game...

Posted by tsc on Dec 8, 2007 five past nine am

...
You kidding, right?

Posted by Alex on Dec 8, 2007 nine pm

Yes... I think... If not I will kill him by myself, remember, I know where's your home, I know who are you, and I know what is The Matrix.
You wanna still kidding?
._.

Posted by Watermellow_DrOnE on Dec 9, 2007 five to three pm

Kidding?!?!? Wha do you mean by kidding?!?!!
Monkey Island looks more like a flash game emulated by a calculator than
something that realy deserves to be blayed...

No normal an paralax mapping
No advanced AI
No cool phisics efects and softbodies
No HD resolution support
No dobli digital pro logic
No veicles
No bood
No bad language
No police officers nor zombies killing
No porn...

Wy should I play it?

Posted by Solarstorm on Dec 9, 2007 four pm

I think you can't understand it KID!

Posted by Watermellow_DrOnE on Dec 10, 2007 five past five am

I think you should read what I wrote again

Posted by Alex on Dec 10, 2007 half past four pm

I think that its a joke but, man You Suck.

Posted by Gorbachov on Dec 10, 2007 ten past five am

I think you are taking him too seryously...
"Not to coment its graphics. Gears of Wars have much more realistical graphics!"
"I hate switching flopies... Why didn't you use blue-ray"
"I can't even play it with 2 players with a split screen..."

Posted by Someone on Dec 10, 2007 twenty five past six am

Speaking of being "emulated by a calcutor" I look forward to the day I can play MI on my CAS/Graphics.

Posted by Greg on Dec 11, 2007 five past seven pm

you shouldn't based on the fact you're a giant walking talking douchebag!
back in the day those graphics were on par and as for vehicles...there are freaking ships you douchebag!

Posted by Joe on Dec 13, 2007 ten to nine am

This is why I stay away from Windows. Or try to.

It made it so stupid people could use computers by MAKING IT OBVIOUS, not by creating ease of use ^^

If it was simply easy, and not damn OBVIOUS, this comment would be invalid.

Posted by JohnnyW on Dec 14, 2007 five past seven am

That's a message from your audio software, not Vista... just so you know.

Posted by capital L on Dec 25, 2007 quarter to eight pm

microsoft vista CAME INTO MY YARD AND KICKED MY DOG!

Posted by gattsuru on Dec 26, 2007 quarter past one pm

It just amazes me that there is not a simple "basic user mode" to "advanced user mode" switch that can be set in Vista.

There is one.  An Administrative Account with UAC 'turned off' runs like a classic superuser or root account until you turn UAC back on.  This can be done from Control Panel-> User Accounts.

Posted by Niels on Jan 10, 2008 one pm

You cannot disable UAC there. To turn off UAC hit win+R, type msconfig, find the 'Disable UAC' entry, hit Execute, and reboot.

As an honest tip for most of the users here: don't disable UAC. Most of the comments here are obviously from its intended audience.

Posted by Lord Banshie on Jan 9, 2008 twenty past nine am

The game did have 3D Scumm graphics!... oh wait...

Posted by Marko on Jan 9, 2008 five past two pm

OMG... I still laugh... you guys are all funny... :D  Especially GoW character. He is precious...

BTW, I use Vista and I do not get laid as much as I did before. Yup. I blame Vista. Cuz its so cute I cant stop working on it :D

Posted by Sean Tilley on Jan 21, 2008 five to four pm

Vista is a terrible OS. Slow, bloated, ridiculous behavior. I'm glad I switched to Linux. (Ubuntu is a badass in my opinion)
Anywho, sucks to be yooou...

Posted by Tim on Jan 23, 2008 one am

I worked on Vista, I was hired just before the big rescope in 2004.
The tragedy of vista is that there are so many really freaking great ideas buried in the muck, like being able to change the volume of individual applications. This makes Vista feel like it's much more in control of what's going on. It's such a handy thing that I'm amazed it hasn't been done before elsewhere. Just a shame that there are so many horribly broken other things going on. SO many talented people left when the rescope happened, it'll be a release or two before windows is back up to XP level again.

Posted by ATMB on Jun 29, 2008 ten to six am

By the way, I see Ron uses a Macintosh... the grey square icon left of the clock is the Boot Camp tray icon, an utility for who installs Windows on his Mac...

:)
