PAXish

Aug 8, 2009 half past nine am

Philosophers around the world pretty much agree that PAX is about the most damn exciting show there is.  Much of the debate currently going on in the marbled halls and ivory towers of the intellectual elite is if me giving this years PAX keynote makes it more exciting or if I'll get up on stage and freeze from stage fright and you'll all stare at me for 45 minutes wondering if this is some some avant-garde performance piece.

Of course, confusing the toga wearing philosophers even more is that Hothead will be showing DeathSpank at PAX.  And when I say "showing", I really mean "showing", like in "actual" "game play".

To truly understand how all this effects PAX, I decided to enlist the help of the world's "top" "mathematicians".  I gave them all the universal constants and variables and they came up with this:

Think on that Philosphers.  Much like on the grade school playground, math wins again.

First!

I didn't know you speak German Ron. Where did you snitch that math? Did you cheat Math in grade school too?

Posted by PirateJenny on Aug 8, 2009 half past eleven am

Keynote on September 4th... that means DeathSpank will be released for Christmas?

Ron I won't be able to come to PAX. Could you record it with your video camera and send it to me on a DVD?

Can't wait to see Deathspank gameplay! Also, good job on improving the german math paper (-:

Germans have very good mathematicians...I was looking for the best.

Wait, DeathSpank is going to be about stationary waves in cylindrical coordinates? SOLD!!!

why ron? why? i hate maths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Hoffmann on Aug 8, 2009 five past four pm

I'm a Computer Science major and I can say that the course has scared me for life because I can actually understand some of that crazy math rubbish. I hate math

cool thing! until then i play "TRINE" a wonderful game! I love that jumpnrun-action-physics thing, i think the mathematics guy programmed that

Posted by Karl on Aug 9, 2009 five to eleven pm

Ron has kind of a special humour, bitter in a way, sometimes annoying, random and nerdy. But even he gets sweet when he talks about being nervous giving a speech. Proof there's a sweet spot inside the grumpy gamer after all.

Posted by thomas on Aug 10, 2009 twenty past noon

where? I cant find it.

Posted by Stevo on Aug 10, 2009 twenty five to five pm

That looks like actual math, not that Hollywood stuff.  Well, except the parts that say, "PAX", "DeathSpank", "Keynote" and "Actual Gameplay".

Any clue as to what your speech will be about?  I'd like to attend but the Schedule page on the PAX site seems a bit lacking...

Posted by Dawid van Straaten on Aug 25, 2009 twenty to four am

Obviously DeathSpank will have different fractal powers. Mandelbrot set of death, Julia set of death, and Fractal Pentagram of hell fire! Many more will be added with patch 1.075128.

Of course, confusing the toga wearing philosophers even more is that >>Hothead will be showing DeathSpank at PAX.  And when I say "showing", I >>really mean "showing", like in "actual" "game play".

Does this mean, Mr. Gilbert, that you will abandon Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episodes 3 & 4?

I mean, I know you can keep secrets, but I don't want you to take them to your grave. :(

Posted by hanky on Aug 21, 2009 twenty past eight am

Ron refusing to tell the Secret of Monkey Island is like the girl at the prom saying no to every guy.

Posted by Samuel Abram on Aug 24, 2009 half past seven pm

Notice that I said nothing about Monkey Island (though I did imply it by noting Ron Gilbert's CIA-like adeptness at keeping secrets, such as that thereof).

My point was that Mr. Gilbert seems to tend to abandon projects after the second iteration (See: Monkey Island, PA Adventures), hence his need to keep secrets in the first place.

Posted by Strange_Bundle on Aug 11, 2009 twenty past noon

Ignore the error part of the note I sent you earlier, Mr. Gilbert.  The latter part of the message still stands, though :)

Posted by petethepanda on Aug 12, 2009 twenty five past eight am

Man, I wish I could make it to PAX :(

Posted by James That Dashing Fellow on Aug 13, 2009 five to five am

Since when does math win on the grade school playground? I thought the bullies always win and the nerds with the glasses and the math books get wedgies.

Posted by Behold! on Aug 14, 2009 twenty past eleven pm

Ron is sometimes as annoying as Martin Prince when he refers to math.

Posted by KyleH on Aug 16, 2009 quarter past four am

The part I find the scariest is that the banner ads are advocating becoming a math teacher now. Or telling me to play math games. Is Deathspank going to have math in it? I hope not!

Posted by Tosus on Aug 18, 2009 half past eleven pm

Sigh.
Understood. Every. Word.
Of course, I happen to be a math major studying in Germany at a German university. These might as well have been notes stolen from my notebook. Well, with the exception of the Deathspank bits. From the looks of it, this is the proof of a theorem about Eigenfunctions in cylindrical coordinates, fairly basic analysis stuff. (Sigh Yes, believe it or not, this is basic. It just gets worse from there). There are a few definitions missing, so it's hard to be sure, but that's about the gist of it.

Posted by dark vader on Aug 20, 2009 ten to ten am

So Ron posted basic analysis math from the best mathematicians in Germany. Good thinking. I knew the math prof in an earlier post was just a high school teacher who was happy to get a picture taken of him.

Posted by obi on Aug 21, 2009 ten to six am

Then why did you choose math in the first place?

Posted by Dawid van Straaten on Aug 27, 2009 twenty five to nine am

I'm studying BSc Mathematics. I love maths. But that's not the point, the point that I wanted to make is that  he probably had to take mathematics courses to attain his computer science degree ;).
