Monkey Island Revival Party

Feb 17, 2008 ten past two pm

Apparently there is a Monkey Island Revival Party in Vienna on February 23rd.   Of course, I wasn't invited, but I'm not bitter, it's not like I had much to do with the damn game, or want to go to Vienna, or like parties and music and drinks and merriment, or pirates.  Maybe I'll crash it.  Yeah, that will show them.

UPDATE:

Here are some pictures from the Revival party that I wasn't invited to.  OK, that's not completely true if truth be told.  I was contacted by one of the organizers who claimed they did send me an invitation, so I combed through all my old email and sure enough, there was the invitation.  If the party hadn't been the same week as GDC, I would have been tempted to hop on a plane and head on over because I love pirates just that much.

Plane tickets are not free, you know. Anyway, are you serious about even considering the idea of going to Europe to meet some Austrian nerds?

Posted by Another Guy Living in Germany on Feb 17, 2008 quarter to four pm

If they had made Ron appear, I would definitley drive down to Vienna.

Posted by Ives Castagnino on Feb 17, 2008 ten to four pm

Hi, Ron.

I'm Ives writing from Vienna. Men, you gotta come here. This party is just awesome! The music is great and the girls jump on you without any reason. We all are having so much fun. And I've already talk with 14 guys who know how you could do a third part of Monkey Island without having the rights of the series. I'll try to remember all the law tricks they told me to tell you, but I'll probably forget them whit tomorrow's hangover.

Ives Castagnino? hmmm... from where? Vienna?

When you see Manuel Mandeb, be sure to give him my respects, please.

Cesar, the Argentinian.

Posted by Ives Castagnino on Feb 21, 2008 ten past two pm

I'll sure do. Nice to know some people still read.

Posted by Moregreae on Feb 17, 2008 five to seven pm

And the really amazing thing is that Ives is posting from that party six days before it happens.  See, the party is so great that it's warping the fabric of time and space.

Posted by Joe on Feb 24, 2008 twenty to five am

Well this kind of cosmic defect happens often, it's a known fact, you really should read some more spacey-kinda books.

Posted by Ives Castagnino on Feb 17, 2008 five to seven pm

The thing is the party is just the final part for the Monkey Island month. Is all a big celebration wich starts on January 23rd.
I mean it, the Vienna goberment takes the game so seriously, that you get an anual subvension just for declare yourself a Monkey Island fan.
They also have the cure for cancer, and my dad is taller than yours.

Posted by Steve on Feb 17, 2008 quarter past eight pm

An anual subvension? That sounds painful.

Posted by Pope Guilty on Feb 17, 2008 half past eight pm

I imagine they figure you wouldn't be willing to fly out for a little local thing. Perhaps educating them is in order...

Posted by Ives Castagnino on Feb 17, 2008 quarter to eleven pm

Well by subvension I mean grant, sorry about that... I always use the larger word, but don't ask why. That goes way back in my childhood...

P.S. My father is still taller than yours

Posted by Fnarg_meister on Feb 17, 2008 eleven pm

Ron,

If you really want to go, post your bank details on here and I'll transfer the cash for the plane ticket ;)

(You'll have to find your own accomodation, but if what Ives says about the girls at the party is true, that shouldn't cost you a cockney-penny)

P.S. My father is fatter than yours, so there!

Des is ja echt saulangweilig. Vor allem den ihre Videos...

Posted by toni on Feb 18, 2008 five past five am

guy living in vienna:never heard of that party. but I'm sure they don't got any   money and no real understanding of the game.

Posted by Kolzig on Feb 18, 2008 half past five am

Too bad that it's during next weekend.
If it was during June I would be able to attend...

Posted by Markus on Feb 18, 2008 five past six am

I work like one minute away from the location. Who the hell are they anyway? Gues I will crash their party :-))))

Posted by Basti on Feb 18, 2008 twenty to eight am

You can fly over to Munich and drive the last part to Vienna with me and my car. See, it's not that far away anymore!!

Check over, Ron. We already have video interviews with nearly all of your former LA-mates on our adventure website but not with you, yet(*). So that's your chance! And you get 2 minutes for pure DeathSpank PR - for free! Promised.

(*) Well, I have to admit, i once pretended to have you on the phone.

Posted by AndyBundy on Feb 18, 2008 twenty past eleven am

yeah Basti 2 minutes... i think for this game, he needs more than just 2 minutes, be so nice and offer him more for free.

Wenn nicht, ich kann dir auch Geld dafür geben, dass du ihn interviewst und mal ein paar Informationen rauskitzelst.... I translate: If you don't, then I could give you some money for interviewing him and get some more information.

@Basti(some personal stuff, you don't need to read anymore): Bist du beim AT?

Posted by basti on Feb 18, 2008 ten past noon

The 2 minutes were ironic, of course. Hell, he can speak to me for the rest of my life if he wants to!

And yes, i'm from the Treff. ;-)

Posted by AndyBundy on Feb 18, 2008 twenty to one pm

I think, he'll do it if you just pay all the development costs for all DeathSpank Episodes, that are going to be released in his life. Whew... don't know how much you would need to pay but hey: Munich.... I mean M.U.N.I.C.H., only the high society lives there :P

And the Treff (das meeting... crossover translation rocks) was my first idea I got when I read your name. Can't you get yourself a better nick? ;)

cheers

I heard it through the gropevine that an email invite was actually sent out...

Maybe it got lost? Too bad, it would have been grand to meet Ron in persona.

Posted by BangBang! on Feb 20, 2008 five to seven am

I like the idea, too bad there's no MI:R party down here in Argentina.

pd: (a street named prechtlg?)

Posted by Jurie on Feb 20, 2008 twenty to one pm

Ron, Tobe is right: the organizer sent you an email. Could it be stuck in your spam filter?

Posted by Hoffmann on Feb 20, 2008 quarter to three pm

Come to Brazil and we will do our own MI party, it's far closer to the caribbean than Vienna. Far more likely that a pirate may show up, I know two or three myself.

Posted by L. Ron Gilbert on Feb 21, 2008 five to two pm

Don't fret, we can crash it together.

I missed it what is it? ^^

Posted by Someone on Feb 24, 2008 quarter to eleven am

it's hardly worth going for. "monkey island" is written on the label of the floppy disk on strongbad's desk. it's just cool to know that the appreciation is there.

Posted by tom|rebell.at on Feb 24, 2008 ten to noon

hey ron, where have you been? we were waiting for you ;)

Posted by F.Konkas on Feb 24, 2008 six pm

Yeah, merriment is overrated...

Check out the above link.... It seems familiar, a witty adventure game with pirates and monkeys

Posted by blombo on Feb 25, 2008 twenty past four pm

Looks horrible, at least from the trailer. I'll give the demo a try...

Hummmming ScummBar's song...

Posted by Arrr2d2 on Feb 27, 2008 twenty five to five pm

Don't know if it's going to be mentioned on his blog but Ron's gone and given an interview to Eurogamer - a British online games magazine:

FYI, gog.com is a company that re-releases games for windows. They happen to have a wishlist for people to suggest games... the monkey island series holds spots 5, 6, and 7 on the all-time most requested games list.

I see a lot of young people at this party, which reminds me that, internationally, there is undeniable interest in "retro" adventure games among young males AND females.

An associate of mine who teaches practical computer skills to children between 7-10 tells me they love it when he allows them to play old Sierra games from his collection.  These are tomorrow's mainstream gamers.
