Über-Awesome Adventure Game Chess Set

Nov 8, 2007 half past one pm

I would kill to have one of these.  Seriously.  If you're the person that made this and wants someone dead, let me know.  I think we can do a deal.  Will travel.

I'm ashamed to admit I don't recognise all the 'bad' guys... can anyone enlighten me?

Posted by Bogomips on Nov 8, 2007 five past three pm

I don't know one of the bad guys. From left ro right:

Fiery LeChuck (Curse of Monkey Island)
Ghost/Undead Elaine (Huh? Where did she came from?...)
??? (Seems kinda familiar though)
Sordid (Simon the Sorcerer)
Klaus Kerner (I think... from Fate of Atlantis)
Purple Tentacle (Maniac Mansion: DOTT)

Posted by Bogomips on Nov 8, 2007 five past three pm

Oh, and I can see both green and purple tentacles have various poses. Neat. Too bad there are no close ups of them.

Posted by Stewart on Nov 8, 2007 ten past three pm

I think the guy with the green hat is from the emerald palace type place in Loom.  I don't know what he's called.  I don't know about the undead Elaine either.  Maybe it's a representation of what Lechuck dreams about.

Posted by Bogomips on Nov 8, 2007 twenty five past three pm

Good catch ;) It is indeed Loom's Bishop Mandible from Crystalgard. I knew he looked familiar, I haven't played Loom in ages.

Posted by draconicman on Nov 8, 2007 quarter past eight pm

I have fond memories of Loom from when I was a kid. I still have it on my computer, but it refuses to run because the monitor can't do 16 colors. XD

Posted by Grant Yeager on Nov 8, 2007 nine pm

Use ScummVM to run this (and the other scumm games + many others :P) on modern comps, and even various handheld platforms.

There is also a really good tutorial available to explain how to use ScummVM to run these games

Hope this helps you play loom again :D

As great as that is, the science fair diorama on the linked page is truly fantastic. "Little Billy and his unhappy marriage of gas and fire"

Posted by Kroms on Nov 8, 2007 five to five pm

Heh Ron where'd you get this from?

Posted by LipeCau on Nov 8, 2007 quarter to six pm

Must.. have... it...

Posted by Gastón on Nov 8, 2007 twenty to ten pm

Cute little Sordid...
glad  the blog is back

Posted by El Rojo on Nov 8, 2007 five to eleven pm

Would love to have one too, even though I hate chess :P

Posted by maYO on Nov 8, 2007 twenty five to midnight

To simply call it "Über-Awesome" is truly an understatement.
Although it looks like Bobbin is trying to hit someone with one of these French breads, "Baguettes" they call them ;).

Hey all, thanks a ton for all the nice comments! :)
And Ron, I'll keep that offer of yours in mind ;)

While great, I still don't get where evil Elaine came from.

Posted by Jacob Brodersen on Nov 9, 2007 twenty five to four am

Oh wow! those are insanely cool! I'm in love with the Tentacle pawns :D

Posted by Agrajag on Nov 9, 2007 quarter past four am

says nothing

This ist [insert the ultimative word to describe great things]!!

Would you mind if i steal the idea and try to build my own version?

What material did you use for it? Fimo? (i don't know if it's the right word in english)

Posted by Ido Beeri on Nov 9, 2007 ten to five am

Ron, the artist who made these drawing is Jonathan Ben-David from Israel.
And he made a lot more fan art than just this (both clay and drawings), you can view his other artworks in this thread: http://hebrewquest.com/phpbbheb/viewtopic.php?t=79 (Hebrew, sorry, so just browse through the pages - his nickname on that forum is Mutajon.)

This is my favorite drawing of his.

wow, I want a chess like that...  why LucasArts never made action figures from it's Adventure games?

Posted by Pod on Nov 9, 2007 quarter to one pm

Who's the good rook? (second from the right in the top picture). Is it meant to be Indiana jones?

It looks like a farmer from trumpton...

Posted by Hunty on Nov 9, 2007 five to nine pm

I'd just like to let you know that some friends of mine just had a baby boy... who they named Guybrush Wednesday.

Look what you've done, Ron... LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!!

Posted by chrisis on Nov 10, 2007 twenty five past two am

She named her BABY Guybrush?

She says it's because it's dumb and helpless and keeps getting in the way.

Posted by Joe on Dec 13, 2007 five to nine am

Seriously?

Posted by CattleSnake on Nov 10, 2007 twenty past four am

That's absolutely awesome. But that is not Green Tentacle! He has arms! Must be one of the tentacles from the future that has undermined Guybrush's forces! :O

Posted by Fearless Flying Monkey on Nov 10, 2007 twenty five past noon

That is soooo cool. The dude who makes them should mass produce them!

Posted by ?? on Nov 10, 2007 half past one pm

Loom is there!!! (well the main character xD)

Posted by Oded Sharon on Nov 11, 2007 seven am

Ron, You'll also get your car (or a model of the same make) when you will travel to Israel to get those.
I personally love the "hanging Wally and Guybrush" ones

Posted by Jonathan Yalon on Nov 11, 2007 quarter past seven am

If you'd come to Israel, I promise to name my baby Guybrush!

(only as a nickname, of course...)

Posted by parrastaka on Nov 11, 2007 five past eleven am

Cool set of pieces!

I've always wondered why it is so difficult to find some good merchandise inspired by the great adventure game classics... I mean you can find some Mario Bros. shirts, bags, toys, or cuddly toys...

OK that's mario. The most popular character in video game world ever? Arguably, yes.

But c'mon! We love Guybrush, LeChuck, Dave, Bernard, the tentacles, Dr. Fred, Manuel Calavera....

There are so many good characters to make funny merchandise: costumes, posters, cuddle toys, t-shirts.........

Aaaaargh.

I will ask my sister to make me some cuddle toys of Guybrush, LeChuck and Elaine. She makes them cool!

Posted by maegashira on Nov 12, 2007 ten past ten am

I know this may sound somewhat blasphemous but: isn't it kinda wrong calling this thing Chess Quest and not putting any * Quest Characters
in it? I'd just love to see a Lucasfilm/Lucasarts vs. (dare I say it aloud) Sierra set.
Anyway, this is just amazing.

Posted by Whup on Nov 14, 2007 twenty five to four pm

Nah, the Sierra pieces would just keep dropping dead for no real obvious reason...

Posted by Cool materials on Nov 14, 2007 twenty to two am

)) Nice looking. But i would buy such chess with different figures.

Posted by JohnnyW on Dec 18, 2007 five to seven am

This is great. It would have been even better if they'd pitted all Sierra characters against LucasArts ones!
