Happy Birthday to Me

May 21, 2008 five past eleven pm

It's Grumpy Gamer's birthday today.  Not me.  The site.   Four years ago today I posted an entry about Why Adventure Games Suck, a re-print of an article I wrote many years ago that became the foundation of Monkey Island's design.

People often ask me why I started blogging?  Was it because I had insight and wisdom to share with an industry that had lost it's way?  Was it because I was bitter and angry and needed a creative way to vent frustration?  Was it further the dialog between game player and game designer in the pursuit of better games?  No, the honest truth is I started blogging because I thought it would be fun to write blogging software.

I registered grumpygamer.com back in 1998ish and the idea was to do a Game Review Review site.  I wouldn't review games, I would review the review of games.  I would pick apart their scoring of graphics and sound (silly categories in my mind) and critique the flaws in how they approached the game's review.  It was a genius idea that lasted about as long as it took the siren's song of apathy to reach my ears.

I let the URL expire and when I started writing my blogging software I needed a good site name.  Luckily no one was as grumpy of a gamer as I was and the URL sat unnoticed in the internet's lost and found room.

And here we sit today.

Of course, no stumbling down memory lane would be complete without a big thanks to my long time friend, fellow game designer and DeathSpank co-creator Clayton Kauzlaric.  Clayton has drawn all the art you see on this site, from the masthead to the comics to a Evil Clown with a Pirate Hook for a Hand.  Thanks man.

And of course, the biggest thrill of all, and the birthday present that means the most to me is that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas decided to make me a new Indiana Jones movie.  Just for me and I'm going to go see it tonight.  Thanks guys.  It means a lot.

Happy Birthday Grumpy Gamer!

You should still do the game review review thing, even if only as an anniversary special thing. It IS a genius idea.

Heh, reading that "Real time is bad drama" paragraph of your essay made me think about how many (recent) games do the exact opposite of what is described and that way killing a lot of the feeling of danger in games.

I had just started playing Bioshock with the sound really loud, when it seemed all hell broke loose and the damned room was flooding. It was quite realistic, it looked good, sounded crazy scary and made me want to run out of the room as fast as I could. Of course I didn't and ran my "instant average game" detection program by standing still in the flooding room for a few minutes. And yup, it just looked and sounded like the room was flooding, nothing was actually happening.

I remember running that same check in the first Monkey Island game when Guybrush got thrown in the water. "Yeah right, I bet I won't really drown if I stay in the water for over 10 minutes!"

Good times.

Congratulations, Ron! Here's hoping the art improves during the next four years.

Here's hoping you make more of those delicious Grumpy Gamer comics (Ron, I know you're reading this, this applies to you as well)! And thanks for teaching me how to do them Clayton, the girl I made a birthday card for was really happy with it (so was I! Who knew it would be so simple?).

Congrats Ron on the four years. And here's to another 30 or so!

(Ha. Tim Schafer's daughter, the Grumpy Gamer site and Rain-Slick Episode One have the same birthday. 'Tis a miracle.)

Here's hoping your Wikipedia article never get's deleted. And DeathSpank spanks it's death onto the spankie industry floor, spanking away at deathly LucasArts executives with deathly spanking spankable spanks. SPANK!

And here's hoping in my next comment I make Spanking Sense!

It's still a stub though.

the only true truth is that this entire blog has been built for my pleasure. In fact the post on adventure games is the only post with my comments. almost.

Four years... pity I didn't find it at the time it was new.

Anyway, the review review thing sounds awesome! You think you could give us a sample of it sometime?

The only secret greater then that of Monkey Island is when your birthday is.
At what date where you born Ron?
And why is that information classified?
Why so many secrets?

Happy Birthday to the Grumpy Gamer!

I will also celebrate this birthday now two days later with going to see the Indiana Jones movie, as it's premiering today in Finland.

I will also celebrate my summer vacation that starts today, but that is a whole another story.

Congratulations Grumpy Gamer! I've been reading this thing for a couple of years now with much joy. And in the absence of semi-regular posts, I still enjoy myself with the random internet links posted. Thanks for the years worth of entertainment!
