Kracken

Apr 26, 2008 twenty five to nine am

The fan fiction game Zak McKracken: Between Time and Space was released a few weeks ago.  How do I know this?  Because I get about 10 emails a day telling me.  Two days ago I actually got a death threat if I didn't post about it and given that I mentioned in an interview a few years ago that I would reveal the Secret of Monkey Island upon my death, I figured I should take it seriously.  For all you aspiring whack-jobs out there, please note that the Secret of Monkey Island will not be revealed upon my death.  The secret has been entombed in a small pyramid-like structure deep in the Nevada desert and thousands of years from now archaeologists will unearth it and twist and construe it's meaning and base their entire understanding of the 20th - 21st century on a hastily scribbled note and a diagram of a monkey with a big arrow pointing to the left.

But I digress.

Go play Zak2

Please don't kill me until DeathSpank is done.

Deaththreats? Over a game? Really? Wow. Are you sure it wasn't Jack Thompson?

To anyone who threatened or insulted Ron: go screw yourselv with a jackhammer. (It works. Try it.) You're lucky he's even around. I say go Ron Gilbert and a million episodes of DeathSpank and whatever else he comes-up with. I'll cram your head in a dryer, you mannerless jackass.

And he can post whatever the hell he wants to post about! If he wants to post about toilet paper, he can do that. If he doesn't, fine. But for the love of decency, people, stop getting your pants in a fit.

Sorry  for the double-comment Ron.

There is no secret to Monkey Island. You've all been had... repeatedly... for nearly two decades. It's like the chainsaw in Maniac Mansion. It exists purely to drive men mad. Don't fall for it! Believe that there is nothing to believe! Only then will you be free at last from the shackles of one man's cruel joke.

Posted by Ives Castagnino on Apr 26, 2008 twenty to eleven am

I demand your review about the game, and a post about toilet paper.
I'm not saying I'll kill you if you refuse. But I could.

After combing every inch of Nevada desert with a radar and a shovel, I must say I am slightly disappointed. And tired, too!

For all us non germans here, the game is only avaliable in german as of yet. Don't download if You don't speak german...

Posted by Jonathan on Apr 26, 2008 twenty five to nine pm

Yes, after waiting about 4 hours for the download to complete only to discover that the game is in German, I seriously contemplated attempting to play and just translate to English as I went.  Then I got realistic and decided to wait for the English version.  Do you, Ron, or anyone else know when that will be?

Posted by Ron Gilbert on Apr 26, 2008 ten to nine pm

No idea.  You'll have to ask one of these folks.

German german german german german german german Zak McKracken german german german german...

Posted by (k)Night Rider on Apr 26, 2008 quarter to ten pm

Do Germans love Zak McKraken because he looks like David Hasselhoff?

Posted by Lemonhead on Apr 27, 2008 ten past one am

Or maybe they like Hasselhoff because he looks like Zak.

Posted by Ogni on Apr 27, 2008 twenty five past one am

We can't give a definite date for the english translation yet, but I guess it will take a while (not withing the next month or two). There are still some bugs to fix first, then we will take care of translating the game. So if anyone wants to help us with the translation please contact us (preferably a native speaker, I guess this would improve the quality of the translation a lot).

And btw. sorry Ron for sending you an email too, it should have been obvious that you already were informed by some of the many german visitors you have here.

Ron buckled to pressure to announce an adventure game... I wonder if similar pressure might induce a response as to what The Secret is...

Posted by Pandan on Apr 27, 2008 quarter past four am

I am ashamed to say that I haven't made it through the first Zak yet... I will some day though.
And also Ron, thanks for a great name. I long for the day when we reach Z.

Oh yeah, speaking of nothing, I guess I should tell you this.
We've got a kennel at home and I have quite an influnce when we name the dogs. Hopefully we will have our E-litter in June and I really want to name one Elaine Marley. My mom wants to put her on G as in Governor though, along with Guybrush. And, yeah, we've already got one Carla the Swordmaster.
You don't mind us using the names, do you?

To get back on topic, I really wish the english version of the game is released soon.
Zak McKracken... Best name ever.

Posted by Lemonhead on Apr 28, 2008 twenty past ten pm

So... When is the Z-litter expected?

Posted by Pandan on Apr 29, 2008 twenty to two pm

... Sometime in the future.
Why? You want to buy Zack? ^^

Posted by Solarstorm on Apr 27, 2008 ten am

Its a urban myth that germans love Hasslehoff, made up by Hasslehoff!
We dont love him!
DEUTSCHLAND!!! FICK JA!!!

Posted by aeyol on Apr 27, 2008 five past two pm

Of course the zak:btas-team doesnīt have anything to do with death threats  we donīt have the money for that! :D
Thank for your posting that, Ron! Although I guess it wonīt be archaeologists who will unearth THE SECRET but rather a gossip writer/reporter who travelled into the future and... babbles nonsense

@Solarstorm
I HATE Hasslehoff :P
And itīs true, you shoudlnīt download zak:btas yet if you donīt understand the language. I know itīs unfair but we want to do our best to give you a nice translation.

What are you "talking" about?
He used "it's" correct. "It's" is short for "it is" or "it has".
I recommend this link

Hasslehoff tore down the Berlin wall singlehandedly! =P

(with his awful singing!)

Posted by Simon on Apr 28, 2008 quarter to two am

I love David Hasselhoff even though I don't agree that he looks like Zak. ;)

If I would ever work on another sequel to Zak McKracken (and David Hasselhoff would have died before that), the Caponian King would be replaced David Hasselhoff.

Ok, I was just kidding, but suddenly it's all about David Hasselhoff. Why? Of course, he was a great man in history, but these comments should be dedicated to the one man who really made a difference: Zak McKracken!

Someone should give me a huge cookie to prevent me from filling innocent blogs with stupid drivel.

Posted by Pandan on Apr 28, 2008 twenty five to six am

Nicely done, here's the cookie!

Posted by Solarstorm on Apr 28, 2008 quarter past six am

Hey Teeferbone, ich hab nen Fehler gemacht, ja und? Wenn du meinst dass du sprachlich so gewandt bist dann versuch das mal zu lesen, und antworte auf deutsch!

Just to stay on topic... Ron did you see the last episode of the Simpsons. They had a really great pirates joke. Really great.

Posted by Sven on Apr 28, 2008 twenty to three pm

Ron, did you download it? :)

Posted by oznerol on Apr 29, 2008 ten to eight am

Posted by gorba on Apr 28, 2008 twenty past five pm

Ron, how do like your eggs?

Posted by 2910 on Apr 29, 2008 twenty five to eleven am

it's a good game. the only bad thing is, that it's crashing every 20 minutes.

btw learn german and the world is yours (mwahaha).

Posted by aeyol on Apr 29, 2008 half past eleven am

@2910 and others who got problems with crashes:
download the dll you can find here:
http://www.linkfile.de/download-ae1eaa32d10b6c886981755d579fb4d8.php
and copy it into the game directory - that should help! :)

Posted by mockasin on Apr 30, 2008 five to six am

I don't think german people possess the refined sense of humour that would be required to produce a worthy sequel to any classic Lucasarts point'n'click.

Posted by hasselhoff on May 2, 2008 five past two pm

You must be joking. If not: well, go on in your little nearsighted world.
By the way: "I've been looking for freedom" caused the berlin wall fall. No, really.

Posted by Giacomo on Apr 30, 2008 quarter past six am

Uh, despite the lovely disclaimer at the bottom of the page, surely LucasArts can sue these people into oblivion; this is waay too close to the original art form.

Posted by Tobias on May 1, 2008 five to three pm

What "original art form"? I'd say that the only possible legal issue is the game's name (and its main protagonist's name). They have done their own graphics, their own story, they even have voice acting. The only thing that's the same is the backstory and the name "Zak Mckracken".

Posted by Kroms on May 1, 2008 quarter to nine pm

Lucas can't stand to do that now. If they sue another team they'd have signed their own death warrant. I know LucasArts hates fans who aren't horny for Lightsabers but if they seriously sue their fanbase they might as well just leave the business right now. I'm sure you know how important fans are, and how important it is to have a community - Valve are living proof of that .

Posted by Leo on Apr 30, 2008 five past seven am

Whooo, this game is awesome! :D FUN!!

Posted by Magos on Apr 30, 2008 five past eight pm

No english version?

That's a lame move if you ask me.

Posted by Nanjidesuka on May 1, 2008 ten past noon

A German team develops a game in seven years and releases it for free.
Do you really think it is lame, that they release the German version first?
There will be an English version anyway.

Good old zak. I remember this game. I quit around the three-headed squirrel. Forget why. Maybe I was just getting bored. Yea. Or maybe I just wanted to clean my room so I could find my old floppies of MI and play it instead. Yea. Or maybe I'd rather pluck my eyeballs out while trying to solve the puzzles. Well whatever it was, reminds of the good old days. Still liked DOTT way more and I'm pretty sure Maniac Mansion was the foundation on which Zak McKraken started. Nobody has heard of this game to be honest with you. Except LucasArt fanatics that still play Loom all day in their parent's basement... at age 30. Lol. Okay so maybe that's a bit of an exagerration. Only the people who remember the name of the troll from MI can appreciate this game. What was it? Or was that what Guybrush was trying to figure out... I forget... been over 10 years since I played that game.... anyway ps.

Posted by Pete of Finland on May 2, 2008 twenty five past eleven pm

You, sir, are the troll.

Posted by Peter on May 4, 2008 five past six am

Oh finally itīs released and i love it. Itīs a shame that Lucas didnīt make a sequal to that really cool classic game. Well but i loved Maniac Mansion a little bit more back then on the C64 and played it several times through. Zak i played a bit later on the Amiga (?) through i guess. It was cool but MMansion was much more interesting for me back then. Donīt know why. Maybe i care much more for purple tentacles then Mars-Aliens. Who knows it ;-)

And hey: Why donīt you start learning german with Zak2. Would be a very good reason for it ;-)

And if you like the good old retro commodore sound/feeling then donīt hestitate to visit my music-homepage with free retro old and newskool synthi (commodore like) tracks.

Keep on da good feeling from back in the days. Let never end it!

Bigs greetz from germany/bavaria,
Peter (alias Sebuko)

Ron, have you ever played Phoenix Wright? Didnīt find any feedback in your archived entries..

Posted by Pandan on May 8, 2008 half past noon

Yes... off-topic... But awesome game.

Posted by Tinydino on May 7, 2008 five to six pm

FOMGZ I KNO THE SECRET!!!!1111 ... hey, I think I'm going to move out to the desert and start a cult of people who claim they know the secret of Monkey Island, and they were summoned by God to protect it. All members of the cult must be able to play an instrument which is how we will finance ourselves (Polyphonic Spree anyone?) I think that would be fun.. yeah.. that's how i'm going to spend my inheritance... yeah... !

I admire these German folks, the always get what they want. Hope TRAM Team could finish DOTT2 sometime.

Btw, Someone should update the Zack's wikipedia entry :)

Posted by King Arthur on May 11, 2008 twenty five to three am

There seems to be "only" a Windows version available.
Btw Ron, please take Mac OS into account too is possible.
