DeathSpank Tidbit

Mar 30, 2009 twenty five past ten am

As some of the more astute web surfers and GDC going elite have noted, it was unofficially announced at GDC that DeathSpank is no longer episodic.

Yes, it's true.

"So", you're probably saying, "Does this mean when I buy DeathSpank I'll just get all the episodes at once"?

"No", I would reply.  Then I would backtrack a little and hedge my bets and say "Maybe" or "Kind of, but not really".

DeathSpank isn't a very patient guy.  He would never be able to play though one episode after another.  He'd just run in and play them all at once.  He's that kind of guy.  He also gets impatient if someone doesn't die fast enough.

So what we did was take all the story, puzzles and fight'n and weave them into one larger game.   The overarching story is the same, but the world is larger, more open, more compelling and completely load-less.  You can walk from one end of the vast world to the other and never see a load screen or camera cut.

We do these things because we care.

OK, it all sounds good. I'm very much pumped for the game, because the concept alone makes me tingle. Finally something to smack around the over-serious "badass" video-games we're getting.

But I was wondering if this meant that you're going to have to delay the game. Is it still pegged for a 2009 release or will this re-designing push it back to 2010?

Posted by Lenny on Mar 30, 2009 twenty five to six pm

Oh heavens no! Please no!
Please release it in the following months!

We need DeathSpank to get through the world recession.

Posted by Sam on Mar 30, 2009 twenty past five pm

So... you are saying this game will have even more awesomeness?

Posted by munchies on Mar 30, 2009 twenty five to six pm

And probably even tightened up graphics as well... yes.
That's what Ron does, that's what he's here for.

Posted by Karl on Mar 30, 2009 half past five pm

Thank you, Ron. You just made my day with this blog post about the one thing I care when I visit: DeathSpank!

Now, if you say when it's going to be released, it's gonna be birthday, christmas, hanukha and kwonza all rolled into one for me.

Ohhhh!

Posted by Ben on Mar 30, 2009 twenty to six pm

Seriously, DeathSpank needs a twitter account. We need to know what he eats for breakfast!

Posted by Random on Mar 30, 2009 twenty five past ten pm

Agreed :)

Posted by Natlinxz on Mar 30, 2009 five to six pm

Hmmm... sounds nice. Is this game going to be on Mac? After all, Ron Gilbert himself uses it.

Posted by bot on Mar 30, 2009 ten past six pm

yes

Posted by pumt on Mar 30, 2009 quarter past six pm

unofficial is the new official.

Posted by Nacho on Mar 30, 2009 twenty to seven pm

Ron, you need a devblog. Now.

Well, you and us. Mostly us.

Posted by Sqorgar on Mar 30, 2009 half past seven pm

It can still be episodic if you make sequels.

Posted by Franz on Mar 30, 2009 ten past nine pm

This actually makes me happy... larger, longer and the removed possibility of ephemeral fan ``feedback`` between episodes.

Posted by hyperslug on Mar 30, 2009 quarter to ten pm

Sounds like the project was scaled back? something to do with the lack of subscribtion options on xlba and psn i guess?

anyway a large game is nice too :)

Ron Gilbert you are my hero

Posted by Jon on Mar 30, 2009 twenty five past ten pm

I approve of this decision, if only because "hilarious, Diablo-style epic murder spree" sounds better as "hilarious, Diablo-style open world epic murder spree."

Posted by quinto on Mar 30, 2009 twenty past eleven pm

Great news!

... any chance to have it italian translated?

Posted by Spanky on Mar 31, 2009 one am

Posted by Alex on Mar 31, 2009 five to two am

And when the hell will be Monkey Island 5 released? Thats what matters assholes!

Posted by Van on Mar 31, 2009 ten past two am

Probably never, unless I become a millionaire or billionaire overnight, because I would give the money to Ron and Tim, and lock then in the Double Fine offices for 5 years because we need a rocking game.

Posted by Van on Mar 31, 2009 ten past two am

Awesome! I'm not sold on the whole episodic gaming, so that's going to rule. Holy crap you guys must've been busy with DeathSpank. Can't wait for it.

I'm really curious to see this updated SCUMM-like engine that this article mentions:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22894

Ron,

Any teasers or info that you can give us on the engine that you brought to the table?

Posted by Dan on Mar 31, 2009 twenty to eight am

Excellent... I hate episodic games - it totally killed the potential of the new Sam & Max games.

Posted by So true! on Apr 2, 2009 half past one am

I didnt even 'looked at', 'touched', 'used', 'used with...' Sam n Max or Bone or what ever the name was.
No go for episodic games!
Hail to the king!

so ds uses a scumm-like engine? thats good because once hothead is gone and ds is unsupported the guys from scummVM will have a easier time adopting their vm to the gamecode ;-).

This is good news, one awesome game is much better than several awesome, but incomplete games.

When will DeathSpank be released?

Posted by Demian on Apr 1, 2009 twenty past midnight

Sorry for going off-topic, but yesterday they ran an article about Tim Schafer on an Spanish newspaper: http://blogs.20minutos.es/videojuegos/post/2009/03/31/grande-figuras-tim-schafer
They mentioned you in it. (If you want a translation let me know.)
And in the body of the article they gave a link to this small game:
http://www.doublefine.com/news.php/minigames/Host_Master
Funny guy this Tim Schafer. I don't know what's your actual relationship with him, but the game brought back good memories.
Regards.

DeathSpank is a hoax.

Posted by Dr. Bernards Lee on Apr 1, 2009 twenty past eleven am

DeathSpank or SpankDeath (internal project name) is a psychological experiment by Stanford University to see how nerds would go nuts about an announced fictional game.

Posted by Van on Apr 1, 2009 one pm

Stanford University is not trying to break new ground then. Because there's been guys doing this type of psychological experiment for years now, the guys at 3D Realms. They even created a fake trailer and screenshots to try and convince people Duke Nukem Forever does exist. We all know George Broussard plays poker and eats pizza all day.

no cut-scenes?

Posted by Kimya on Apr 9, 2009 five past ten am

That sounds great! I don't mind episodes (I loved the two seasons of Sam and Max) but I miss the depth of the old games.

The objects used and locations visited during one episode would disappear in the next one. It felt like we had a lot of limitations, and the story did not feel as a whole. I could not get as immersed into the episodes as I did in any older "full" games.

I want to be able to use one item with another and keep the objects I used at the beginning of the game. You end up with a ton of elements (items, locations, and people) and you have no idea of how to continue; that's the fun of it!

A couple of weeks ago I was listening to 'Born To Be Wild' and thought it would make a good DeathSpank anthem.

Now whenever I listen to the music I can't get the image of DeathSpank on a motorcycle out of my head.

I mention this here so that hopefully I won't have to be the only one afflicted with this association.
