DeathSpank Coming Nowish.

Jun 23, 2010 twenty to two pm

Is it snowing in Hell?  Are pigs flying?  Are the Republicans admitting to global warming?  No, it's actually the 25th seldom mentioned sign of the apocalypse: DeathSpank is poised to hit PSN, XBLA and [REDACTED] on July 13th, July 14th and [REDACTED] [REDACTED]th.

You've got a few weeks to come up excuses for not showing up to work for a few days.  Might I suggest: "Go to hell, I'm staying home to play DeathSpank".  Tell'em Ron said it was OK.

So in celebration, please enjoy some early concept art by Clayton Kauzlaric.  I'd show you some of my concept art, but then you'd go blind and the healthcare in America sucks.

Presumably [redacted] is either Steam, playgreenhouse.com, or similar, and is after July 14th, assuming the dates listed are chronological in the text.

Now watch Hothead Games prove me wrong by making Deathspank magically appear on the Wii

Posted by jni on Jun 23, 2010 quarter past three pm

Then again, a diablo meets monkey island has to have a [REDACTED] version since those two games were for [REDACTED], doesn't it ? I don't mind having to wait a little though since my neurons have to recover from all these hours playing Dragon Age. By the way, dialogue trees are really broken in that game ; seems like rpgs still have a lot to learn from adventure games...

Posted by clone2727 on Jun 23, 2010 twenty past three pm

I'll have to say Steam too. Hopefully satisfying both Windows and Mac owners at the same time. :)

Sorry your dreams didn't fully come true. But between Argentina winning the cup, and DeathSpank being released, I know which one you'll chose :)

Erm... are you being serious, or is this one of those cases where you don't actually 'mean' what you say? Because I can never tell with the internet any more.

Because, you know...  if you 'mean' what you say, you're essentially declaring on Ron Gilbert's blog that you intend to steal from Ron Gilbert. I'm not sure if Ron Gilbert would be cool with that.

Computer game piracy was cool in the 1980s, when Duran Duran sang that song with Cyndi Lauper about how rad it was to copy 8-bit games. But you know, times have moved on, and it's all about drive-by shootings and aggravated robbery now.

Posted by BangBang! on Jun 24, 2010 twenty past eight am

Yeah, and back in the 80's God didnīt punish pirates as well. Don't foget to mention God.

...filing a form for the deadline extension on my thesis...

(Is there any way to make the title of the game show up on my credit card bill? I really want my wife to discover "$19.99 / D-SPANK" on the bill at the end of July. It would be like that "$100 / HAPPYENDINGMASSAGE" story, but with a much happier ending.)

Deathspank. A game where monkey island (pc game) meets diablo (pc game). Not available for pc. Good promotion!

Posted by Nopoly on Jun 25, 2010 quarter past eight am

Well, actually Monkey Island was released on Amiga, Atari ST, FM Towns and PC...

But does it really count?

Yes but these platforms do not exist anymore.Only pc

Only 57 comments until now. Considering only a few days left for the release, It's perfectly clear that not announcing a PC version of the game has left many followers behind. Pity.

Posted by pananag on Jul 3, 2010 two am

4 of them (counting this one too) are mine where I complain about the lack of a PC version. I must be getting on the people's nerves.

Posted by Someone on Jul 3, 2010 two am

My mistake, 5 of them. In one I forgot to post a name.

Posted by Dan on Jul 5, 2010 five to seven am

I don't think so, what MAY have pissed some people off is the fact that alot of websites when revealing news about DeathSpanks always classified it as a "PC Title", without any REAL information or plataforms confirmed,, that misleaded people to think a PC Version WAS confirmed, when it wasn't, it never was.

Announcing a PC release now (With SC2 Coming out FOR PC this same month) would be a marketing suicide, yeah, they are different Titles, but Starcraft is a long waited title, and with all the adversite they are doing for it, it's hard to get MainStream attention on other titles, this month.

Besides of that (and other PC titles coming soon, that would clearly, make DeathSpank, a NEW IP (not a old traditional one like Monkey Island for example) crawl in a corner while others get all the attention, that, summed up with the Piracity count on the PC Plataform, would lead to a failure, and the title wouldn't sell as good as it could (Yeah, there is piracity on Consoles, but trust me, it's not as big, Cheap, and easy as on the PC).

Not announcing it FOR NOW, is a Smart move, they keep espectation on the title, and people wont forget about it, Diablo III comes to mind, it was announced way before it's completion, and yeah people is waiting for it, but alot of other people have moved on with their lifes and don't give a shit about it, atleast, till it gets released.

About MI2: SE

Ron, it seems that YOUR ORIGINAL VERSION is still the BEST...
A lot of complaints about it...

Is it possible that today LucasArts is not capable of doing ONE thing right?!?!!?

Looking forward DeathSpank!!!

Posted by Ron Gilbert on Jul 7, 2010 twenty five past ten am

I feel that any lover of classic adventure games should be thrilled with LucasArts for re-releasing these games and we should cheer them for it.  Literally, hundreds of thousands of new people are getting their first exposure to point-and-click adventure games and there is a good chance they will want more.

Posted by D on Jul 7, 2010 twenty to eight pm

Exactly, plus I don't get where the complais are, aside from lacking the old menu on-screen which was easier to use (New one just get a while to get used to) I find it a quite good re-creation of the Original one.

Posted by Oldrien on Jul 8, 2010 quarter to two am

List of Objective Complaints:

INTRO removed!!!
IMUSE REMOVED!!!!!!! (xbox360 version)
Classic Version Broken!!!!

Wow! what a special edition!

My personl Complaint:
Characters design is still TERRIBLE (even if better that MI1:SE)!!!

I have bought MI2:SE as soon as it has been released (on Xbox360).

But I find myself enjoy the old SCUMMVR version far more!!!!

Nowaday Lucasart is one of the most disappointing software company (still) on the market.

The idea of the SEs is great on paper but in reality it is a mere money speculation (with no heart).

Posted by Zack on Jul 8, 2010 twenty past eight am

You call yourself a Purist? Then stay with the ORIGINAL, OLD, CLASSIC version, when you try to improve something, stuff like that happends, you complain about iMUSE, something and as nifty as it was back on the date, nowdays people wouldn't even realize what it is, the music and sound + Voicing is really good on SE version.

Intro Removed? oh yeah your right, two Monkeys dancing, some music and basically text about the creator, wow sure it's a great loose, if you want to see the intro just go to YouTube, I didn't even realize it was gone, is not like it had some CRUCIAL Story elements on it.

Classic Version Broken? you should be thankfull THEY LET YOU PLAY CLASSIC ON THE FIRST PLACE, go check how many "remakes" let you do that.

I'm sorry you find all those rlly importantz elements you say there break your experience on the SE version, but like I said, if your a "MI Purist" stay to the Original stuff, you just expected a Graphically Improved + Voice Act version? Then I'm sorry for you.

Posted by Oldrien on Jul 8, 2010 ten to ten am

I really do not understand your "everythings is fine" attitude...
Good for you that you enjoyed it 10000%...
We are lucky that they removed those 2 monkey dancers at the beginning and that they removed that stupid dinamic music transition... After all I am so thankfull that They let me play the classic verison! And also leave some bugs here and there so that I can talk about them in the forum over the web...

Maybe you liked also the haircut of Guybrush in MI1:SE...

(As I read else where) I just immagine a Star Wars special edition without the opening titles... Or with a different sound track... or that is cut worse than the original... (or luke with a banana hair-cut...).
As a day1 fan, what would you say?

Yes, new people will really love MI2:SE. Because MI2 is a TRUE matserpiece.
I have to say that I am enjoying MI2:SE too, in particular the new control scheme, so do not be sorry for me...

But let me say, as a day-one fan, I am just disappointed by the fact that LucasArts released a "Special Edition" and it was not even capable of implement Imuse, release a product free of bugs, and respect the original cut...

MI2:SE deserved something a little bit more perfect.

In any case & for many reasons I really hope that MI2:SE will be a great, HUGE success!!!

Posted by JB on Jul 10, 2010 five am

I just bought MI2 SE (from france). They removed the introduction and this is outrageous.
It's like erasing one eye of the Joconde. What for? What's the point? There is no point.
"Two monkeys dancing" ? Is that the only thing some of you remember of the intro ? The intro is made to get you started, to make you feel the story.
MI 2 is a piece of art. And I now begin to feel that Lucasart (as well as Lucasfilm) enjoy destroying their wonderful heritage. It's like someone removed the opening crawl of star wars in some stupid  new edition.

If, as Ron told us, video games is a form of art, then we need proper CURATORS. I'm a specialist in the history of science, so I know what I'm talking about.
Look at what fans did to preserve the Star wars films with their great project to build an HD version of the ORIGINAL movie.

Some crazy fans has to do it with MOnkey Island. I feel that Lucasart isn't going to do any good.

Now, on a different matter: Ron, most of your fans (like me) are computer people, Atari-Amiga-PC people.  Not releasing Deathspank on PC firsthand is a bit outrageous too, since most of us followed through your blog the genesis and development of the game.

Sorry to be so disappointed.

Posted by Mike on Jul 10, 2010 five past six pm

"Now, on a different matter: Ron, most of your fans (like me) are computer people, Atari-Amiga-PC people.  Not releasing Deathspank on PC firsthand is a bit outrageous too, since most of us followed through your blog the genesis and development of the game. "

Just that part there blowed up your whole comment, How you know "most of" Rons fans are ... "Computer People" as you call them? You shouldn't make assumptions like that Mr.Science Man wink wink.

Second on that not releasing DeathSpank on PC FIRST, is actually A SMART MOVE, for the whole GAME and the Company behind it, Yeah it sucks, but well, you can buy it on 4 days or wait till the [REDACTED] Version is announced, oh by the way one of the reasons they stated they didn't voice anything about the PC Version yet, is because they don't want to make a lame console-2-computer port, they wanna make a proper PC Version of the Game, shit like this happends when you are triying to run a Business =).

Oldrien about the SE Version, you have some valid points regard MI itself, but I believe what made Monkey Island so great back then was the way they could combine a somewhat SERIOUS storyline with so much humour, hilarious dialogues, and the amusing and sometimes back then, frustating Puzzles, and they are all there on the SE version, the important fact to have in mind is LucasArt is betting on Adventure Games again, bringing the option to New Gamers to pull their heads off the generic FPS genre butt and try something Different, Fun, alot more brain-exercising and in alot of ways, more Educative than most of the games we get these days, just for that LucasArt deserves a thumbs up, It been ten long years, they are abit rusted up, let them get the Engines up-to-date =).

For Ron, just out of curiosity, I saw a Interview recently where you said you were messing with your iPhone & Ipad games latelly and programming abit while on your "vacations", tell us the truth, your working secretly on a  Armory App ala WoW for DeathSpank for our touch devices aren't you?

Posted by Oldrien on Jul 8, 2010 two am

Ron,
as you say let's hope that this could serve the pourpose of Monkey Island 3 (or 5) Ron Gilbert Magic Edition!!!

In this sense, I really really believe that new people could enjoy MI2:SE greately!!!
MI2 it is a pure masterpiece, SE or not.

After all, my complaints came from a 20 years old maniac MI purist fan!!!

Posted by Fealiks on Jul 13, 2010 twenty to nine am

I feel like people are moaning for the sake of moaning... The special edition was an improvement over the original. It's not healthy to put things on pedestals and ignore their flaws. While the original was a GREAT game, the special edition, in my opinion, has improved it.

And if you're going to scrutinize every detail compared with the original then you're never going to be happy because you're looking for the same game... :p

Posted by Dustin on Jul 7, 2010 twenty five past seven am

I'm very excited to hear DeathSpank is coming to PSN next week! Day 1 purchase for me. It looks phenomenal! But I have to ask...

After reliving my childhood through the Monkey Island 2:SE demo on the PSN last night, I started reading a great deal of information on Monkey Island 1 & 2. The "all-knowing" Wikipedia said

"None of the games explicitly reveal the "Secret of Monkey Island" (although creator Ron Gilbert has stated that the secret was not revealed in any of the games, and that the true secret would be revealed if he got to work on the fifth entry in the series)."

My question is this: If DeathSpank sells well, will you PLEASE do a 5th game in the Monkey Island series to conclude your original plans for the Monkey Island trilogy?

I hear those good folks at TellTale are bringing back the Point-n-Click genre... with a VENGEANCE!  = D

Wow Mojo. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was disapointed by that. I kept building up the dancing monkeys credit sequence to my friends who are a part of the group 'first experiencing monkey island' sadly. The dancing monkeys at the lucasarts screen just wasn't enough :( But moving on, I will also be purchasing death spank today, for if Ron Gilbert slapped a 20 dollar price tag on a looping cout message I would still buy it. Ron, please tell money hungry lucasarts chumps to rerelease Maniac Mansion, while they are on fast track to rereleasing the most epic games of all time.

Hi Ron Gilbert,
i am a big german FAN of the old Style games linke Monkes Island.
There is a big community world wide loving the old SCUMM style. Your remake special edition of Monkey Island was bullshit (sorry for that word)
There are million of fans still waiting for a continue of Fate of Atlantis or Monkey Island. Please check e.g. the forum of: www.barnettcollege.com
I and a lot of people world wide would pay 100-200 dollar for an real old style game. Not with the new graphic oder speach THE OLD ONE. If there would be such an old game Lucasart would sell it 1*n times.
Please think about that and see how much people are behind this old style.
regards, Felix

Posted by Fealiks on Jul 13, 2010 half past eight am

As great as that would be, it's not a marketable idea, so it won't happen. Who's going to give them a budget to produce and distribute it? You?

And do you really think Ron (and other developers) want to go back to version old-school-point-zero of SCUMM? An artist produces what THEY want to produce and they produce it how THEY feel it will come out best. Making advances and innovations is a big part of this. If you sacrifice your artistic integrity just to please the crowd then people will say things like "You've changed, man, it used to be about the music" and call you a sell out while throwing styrofoam cups at you. No one needs that.

Hmmmm... if by 1*n, you mean that n = 1 (ie. you) then yes, you're correct

felix, grow up.

I agree with felix schueler. The style and simplicity of the Scumm Engine is refreshing against today's super high paced style games that are dominating the gaming industry.

I agree with Felix, too. I have pirated all my games for more than i can remember (i started with Floppy Disks) but i sure as hell would pay $200 for the true sequel to monkey island 2, i would even send that money to Ron if that went to his development budget.

It'll come eventually. It's probably being released at the same time internationally, meaning that it might not be July 13th yet in the timezone that controls the releases.

I just hope the Europe PSN Store and XBLA don't play dirty on us, I'm here with all my cute MS Points waiting =).

By the way Fealiks, nice comments up there, mostly on the SE topic, thumbs up for you for thinking out of the box.
