100% April Fools' Joke Free

Apr 1, 2005 five past eight am

It's the kind of hard-hitting-no-punches-pulled integrity you've come to expect from the 1,437,512nd most popular site on the web.

And if you care:  The undetermined origins of Aprils Fools' Day

UPDATE:  After reading over 300 RSS feeds littered with April Fools' stories, I am convinced that April Fools' is the day everyone who isn't funny gets to act funny and everyone cuts them some slack.

GoogleGulp is great - not for the actual premise particularly, but the stuff they've written for it has some really funny self-satire.

yeah, just read it, and laughed pretty loud ...

... especially at the whole "invite only/viral marketing" thing and the stuff about a company in Redmond ...

I really, really, really hate all the lame (and that means "all") attempts at "fooling" people.

I haven't seen a single so-called "joke" that is actually funny. It seems that nowadays it's the "joker" trying to have fun at the expense of the rest. This is, at the very least, very inefficient.

Just look at slashdot. It's useless on april 1:st every Gnu damned year. (let's not argue about it's usefulness on other dates)

Today I even saw the following at a popular bittorrent tracker (just seeding holy free software, of course):

L: I'm going to stop seeding now (he's the only seed, rest is 35% done --eloj)
Everyone: WTF? Why?
L: I can't tell you.
Everyone: Go burn.
<time passes>
L: Just kidding. April fools everyone!

Wow. Actually, I don't think it can get any more stupid than that.

PS.
A virtual http://www.jinx.com/scripts/details.asp?productID=357 for you Ron. I'd send a real one, but I'm poor. (And grumpy)

I think that Ron Gilbert played us all as fools these past years, keeping his new project on very "hush-hush", Damnit Gilbert tell us what it's about, I know you're keeping quiet for the tax dodge, admit it! ADMIT IT!

the real fools are those that fool the foolish, and end up being fooled themselves. fools.

I'll agree with you comment about how it is a bunch of unfunny people trying to be funny.  Now I don't mind it too much when companies pull it off and make fun of themselves and their industry (like Google and Blizzard).  But when news sites like Slashdot and Gamespot try it, it's pretty pathetic.

yeah this year seems pretty calm to me, most people i met didn't have any pranks planned, nor got any done on them

the weekly steam update tod us that it was taking de_dust away, bringing back the riot shield, increasing the realism by making the weapons jam (which would then make them be taken in for servicing) and loads of crap like that, loads of people went in up roar, but then they looked at the date.
The Sun Newspaper told a story about gypsies having rights to camp in buckingham palace, Daily Star reported that robbie williams was turning into a transvestite and scumm bar and world of monkey Island combined made loads of bad april fool's jokes...
Would you really say it was quiet this year?

Posted by Kingzjester on Apr 3, 2005 five to ten am

Well, there weren't no persuasive Monkey Island 5 cutscene voice samples...

Posted by drunkymonkey on Apr 3, 2005 twenty five to three pm

true true, but that happens every year.

Man, all the hate for April Fools!  I've heard nothing positive from anybody!  Just cranky "Damn Whippersnappers!" kind of stuff!

I don't mind April Fools, I think of it as being a little like a national holiday.  From reality.

I mean seriously, its really not that difficult to tell where the jokes are, and its much better than the alternative of all news outlets being hyper serious "we can't laugh at ourselves because our coverage is perfect" all the time.
