Considering that you can never be entirely sure what Vista's audio system is up to, it's not really such a bad thing.
After all Windows has typically always been proud when something actually worked and thus displayed those little bubble messages. It's really quite a jarring experience when you go back and forth between Mac and PC often. You just presume it works on the Mac. On Windows you really kinda do need the confirmation.
