As someone said above, this is Realtek's fault. Their new XP drivers probably do the same thing. So sick of people blaming Vista for everything :)
This pissed me off so much when I got my new Dell box that I spent 10 minutes working out how to turn it off. Here's how:
* Open control panel
* Open Realtek HD Audio Manager (at the bottom of hardware & sound if you use the new-style control panel)
* Click the blue "I" in the bottom right (above the OK button)
* Click the blue dot next to "Display Icon in Notification Area" to remove the tray icon, and the popups. It's not like you needed that icon anyway.
