Here is a movie I made with my friend, Tom, back when I was 15 or so. We were sure we’d be the next George Lucas or Steven Spielberg.

Little did I know a few years later I’d be working at Lucasfilm and Steven Spielberg would call me up for hints on Monkey Island. He couldn’t use the 1-900 number like everyone else.

The movie has sound, but it was lost when it was transferred to VHS and this goofy music was added.

In case the Smithsonian wants to preserve the movie as historically important, here is the link.

What a shame the audio is lost. i gotta say the music puts it into creepy territory. I feel like im watching lore videos inside an indie horror game

Nice! A very short moment there, I thought you had a very young Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker in there.

They don’t make movies like this anymore 😄 strong future Lucasfilm vibes! Somewhere in there you realized the world needed Guybrush Threepwood 🏴‍☠️🐔

Happier times for humanity and creative people. Seeing those old phones and old school devices really touched me. Great stuff, Ron!

I have a weird, hazy, distant memory of you sharing this a decade or so ago? Am I misremembering? If not, perhaps the audio is in that version? It was either on this site or via twitter (RIP).

Yes, I shared this a while ago and it was lost when rebuilt my site. Someone recently asked where they could find it, so I dug it up again.

Very cool short film. It's a shame the audio got lost over the years. I was especially impressed by the effects (that hand!) considering how old you were when you made it and the tools you had available.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to ask for a bit of advice. I've been working on a small indie adventure game in AGS for a while now. I've never worked in game development before, so a lot of the time I'm learning the tools as I go (sometimes the hard way).

Do you have any advice or guiding principles for someone trying to make a classic-style adventure today? It would be an honor to hear something from Ron Gilbert himself (bows), but advice from anyone here would also be very welcome.

The whole idea actually came to me after playing Return to Monkey Island, so in a way this is partly your fault.

Cheers!

I will dub it.

Spaceships… teleporting…alien planet… a severed hand…
You can see where Spielberg got his idea for the Dig from.
